Japan finally lifts its 67-year-old ban on dancing

Japan has lifted a 67-year-old ban on dancing, to the delight of the nation's clubbers.

The ban forbids public dancing unless the venue has a licence, and even licenced premises have to stop all dancing by midnight.

The Footloose-esque law was put into place after the Second World War, in an effort to crack down on dancehalls that were often a hotbed for prostitution.

Since then, Japan has developed into a thriving and highly developed nation - yet the archaic dancing ban remained on the books for decades.

Clubs that didn't serve food closed at 11:30, clubs that did serve food stayed open til 4am. At least this is the way it was in Yokohama.

It'll be interesting to see what pops up on my 'recommended for you' (which seems to be based on one's viewing habits).

10. NYC still has the same law -- 91 years and counting!

A "cabaret" license is required before any two patrons could move to the beat.

If a customer at Muchmore's in Brooklyn so much as busts a move, owner Andrew Muchmore could be busted.

New York City prohibits dancing in a venue unless it has a cabaret license, and Muchmore's—like lots of bars and restaurants across the five boroughs—doesn't have one.

Now, Mr. Muchmore, who is also a lawyer, is challenging the city's nearly 90-year-old cabaret law in federal court on the grounds that it violates freedom of expression and due process guaranteed by the First and 14th Amendments, respectively.
