Former White House top chef found dead in New Mexico mountains
By Lindsey Bever June 22 at 3:14 AM

Walter Scheib, the 61-year-old former White House executive chef who had been missing in New Mexico’s rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains for more than a week, was discovered dead late Sunday night by a search and rescue crew.

Scheib’s body was found nearly two miles from the Yerba Canyon Trail head in Taos, N.M., a town some 70 miles from Santa Fe.

“I know the trail itself has a pretty steep incline,” New Mexico State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Liz Armijo told The Washington Post. “It took a long time to get the body down. It was a very rugged, very steep and very slow-going process.”

Scheib was last seen setting out for a hike June 13. Days later, local police found his vehicle parked at the head of the Yerba Canyon Trail, a 4-mile path near Taos that ascends steadily gaining 3,700 feet in elevation, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The area is known for what the U.S. Forest Service describes as “some of the best trout fishing” in New Mexico. Local news reports said police believed he had intended to fish there.

I only caught little brook trout, but they were wild native fish. Cool stuff.
Nambe was pretty cool place to fish, too. NM is not the place to take a
fishing vacation, though I never tried the San Juan river.

looks pretty, but was never big on lake fishing
Spent more time in the upper part of the San Luis valley area, Taos is in my opinion the lower section of the valley.. Use to live in Alamosa so I explored the whole area and you are right about fishing in New mexico and I was born there

At 9000 feet it's a great place for a flatlander to become acclimated to elevation
on the way to Colorado's 14'ers from Oklahoma. Trout for breakfast, an ever higher
hike for several days, and Trout for supper!! I have backpacked the Latir Peak
Wilderness area.

The San Jaun below Navajo Lake holds Trophy Trout and not so many years ago
you might find yourself fishing next to Curt Gowdy!

The Rio de los Pinos is my idea of what a Trout stream should be. The Rio Grande
holds it's share of trout also.

He worked at the Whitehouse for most of the Clinton years, therefore Hillary must have pushed him off the mountain.

Look for rather tasteless and downright nasty comments to follow from teabaggers in comments sections of news media sites everywhere.

...and if you don't, make sure its a well traversed trail and not too "technical"......And ALWAYS let a few people know where and when you're going and when you should be back.
