A father drowned as he rushed to save his children from the Missouri River during a Father’s Day outing at NP Dodge Park.

Though he couldn’t swim, Elias Salvador jumped into the river to try to save his two daughters and two other children when the current swept away the wading kids, said Anthony Ochoa, a family member.

After being rescued by others, the two daughters stood on the shore and looked to the river at the spot where their 31-year-old father had gone under.

“Papa, don’t go,” one daughter said, according to Ochoa. “Don’t die.”

A young father is missing in the Missouri River after a Father's Day outing near NP Dodge Park apparently turned tragic.

A friend and a family member say Elias Salvador, who does not know how to swim, jumped into the river about 3 p.m. to save his two daughters and two other children when the river pulled the wading kids into the current.

"They were just enjoying Father's Day," said Luis Rodriguez, who said his uncle is the missing man. The group had gone to the river for fun and fishing, he said. Rodriguez arrived at the scene after his uncle disappeared and the search had begun.

Officials shut down the river to facilitate the search. The Omaha Police Department's helicopter and a rescue boat with sonar were brought in for the search. Authorities also searched along the shoreline.
