Evidence may lead to new probe in 1961 death of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld

New evidence submitted to the United Nations' General Assembly this past week could help shed light on one of the enduring mysteries of the 20th century namely, was the 1961 death of the second UN Secretary General an accident or an act of murder?
<snip>
The 56-year old Swedish diplomat was in Africa to try to unite the Congo, but faced resistance from a number of multinationals, often supported by mercenaries and openly hostile to the UN, who coveted the area's mineral wealth.
The crash has been a source of widespread speculation for decades, which has ramped up thanks to evidence uncovered in the last few years.
That includes testimony from a former U.S. National Security Agency intelligence officer who claims he heard a recording of another pilot attacking the plane, as well as a Belgian pilot who says that he accidentally shot the plane down after being hired to merely divert it.

The result? The very personification of corporate mindset, Mobutu (the rest, as they say, is history).
It occurs to me that in the history if mankind, there have been great leaders who emerge in order to lead the people from darkness int the light. But no sooner are they idetified as being eloquent and charismatic leaders, they are taken out.

(5,902 posts)Wikipedia, in particular, is now practically controlled by these propaganda trolls. It's become practically impossible to defend populist leaders (especially those currently in office) from even the most tabloid-like aspersions on the "encyclopedia that anyone can edit."
The problem there being that Wikipedia has also, unfortunately, become the quick reference of choice for millions of young people who hardly remember what a book feels like. One sometimes even sees op-ed writers for major periodicals copy parts of certain articles verbatim. It really is Orwellian.

(11,175 posts)It's perfect for the left in that it's relatively free of commercial influence -- no advertising, and also no fee to use it.
A systemic problem is that the concept of "reliable sources" is often interpreted narrowly, to favor the corporate media. The solution is for more people to get involved as volunteers.
If you give me specific examples of unfair attacks on populist leaders, I can see if I can help correct them. More generally, any DUer who's interested in helping at Wikipedia should PM me and I'll be glad to give you whatever coaching you need to feel comfortable with it.

(70,504 posts)Williams's book pointed to the existence of US National Security Agency (NSA) radio intercepts of warplanes in the area, which are still top secret after 52 years. Hammarskjöld's death came at the height of a conflict between the UN-backed Congolese government in Leopoldville, now Kinshasa, and secessionists from the mineral-rich province of Katanga, supported by Belgian colonialists.
The US and British were angry at an abortive UN military operation that the secretary general had ordered days before his death on behalf of the Congolese government against the rebellion in Katanga, which was backed by western mining companies and mercenaries.
The Hammarskjöld commission, chaired by a former British court of appeal judge, Sir Stephen Sedley, called for the NSA intercepts to be released.

In his cable, sent at 11am on 18 September, Gullion correctly identifies the Ndola area as the crash site. He also names the suspected Belgian pilot as "Vak Riesseghel", almost certainly a mis-spelling of Jan van Risseghem, who had served in the South African and Rhodesian air forces, and commanded the small Katanga air force.

It have been a long standing "know" that Hammarskjold was killed in Congo - by who is still a subject to debate - but that he got killed because of his role as UN Secretary General and his role in trying to build peace in the new state of Congo are not really a big secret - and have not been for many, many decades - even my old folks home at least 20 years ago stated that Hammarskjold was killed - but they had no answer to who killed him - even if they pointed clearly to either mercenaries - or to CIA, who had a few bones to pick with Hammarskjold, as he had faulted their plans to many times before.. And from Big Business who clearly had no will to work with the new government of Congo - and had all the interest in the world to destroy whatever government who was not into it like they was
The truth will come out, sooner or later - even if it is to late to punish anyone who was part of the killing of Hammarskjold, and the many others who was on that plane who was more or less possible shoot down by some.. But that Hammarskjold was murdered is no doubt at least from what I know about the subject...

(11,481 posts)In 1971, ten years after the assassination, I was approached by someone who I knew through my wife at the time. He was actually her boss and we were out drinking after work one night (she worked the night shift) and he offered me a job with the CIA. Now the drinking in itself was odd, because for the year of so that I had known and known of him, he had claimed to be an alcoholic who no longer drank, but here he was sipping on a whiskey and water. So that was the first oddity in what turned out to be an interesting and memorable night.
At first I just kind of laughed it off as a joke, but he wasn't acting like it was a joke. He then started talking a little more seriously about it. Being an anti-war activist, as well as being active in union politics in a large industrial union at the time, I accused him of trying to recruit me to turncoat on my comrades. He didn't deny it and offered $30k per year as a starting salary.
As we talked further, he started to talk about all of the assassinations and assassination attempts that had happened in the last few years. I had heard a little about attempts to assassinate Castro and I accused him of trying to use me for that purpose too. Once again, he didn't deny it.
Then he went further. He started talking about CIA assassination plots and the one he stressed was killing Hammarskjold by shooting down his plane in Africa. He said that that was one that he was personally involved with. What made this more than just a joke or some sort of self aggrandizing story was, first, his utter seriousness as he told some of the details of the plot AND the fact that it was about Hammarskjold, who was relatively unknown in my little backwater town. I doubt if more than a handful of people would have known who Dag Hammarskjold was if you held a gun to their head. After all, it had been a full decade since the act and there weren't a whole lot of stories coming out doubting the "official" story of just an accidental plane crash at that time.
Anyway, I still don't know if B was serious or not, but that night has stayed in my mind all these decades later. And quite frankly, it sounded like the truth at the time and nothing that's happened since has changed that opinion. There have been a TON of CIA conspiracies that have proven out over the decades, so I don't doubt the CIA's complicity in his death at all.

(5,217 posts)whatever they want. Nothing stands in their way anymore. Money laundering for terrorists and drug cartels barely results in a slap on the wrist. They certainly would not serve any jail time for a veiled threat to someone's life or family's lives, especially since they would thoroughly insulate themselves from the deed, and deny it any knowledge of it if confronted.
Before anyone scoffs at this prospect answer me this:
What barrier stands in their way to keep them from doing this? I say none.
