Mike Huckabee: More Guns in Church Could’ve Stopped Charleston Shooting
Source: Mediaite
As a presidential candidate like Mike Huckabee should probably know by now, if you start a sentence with it sounds crass, but, you probably shouldnt finish that sentence.
During an online interview with Fox News Todd Starnes on Friday, Huckabee said of the shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, It sounds crass, but frankly the best way to stop a bad person with a gun is to have a good person with a weapon that is equal or superior to the one that hes using.
Huckabee was reacting to President Barack Obamas decision to bring up the issue of gun control during his remarks on the shooting yesterday, a move Starnes called pretty despicable.
The candidate agreed, saying it was disappointing to hear Obama grandstand about gun control in what he described as minutes or possibly hours after the news first broke (it was approximately 14 hours later, for the record).

Not to be left out of the string of GOP candidates saying stupid shit in response to the SC shooting, the Huckster takes a break from his usual activities of hanging with pedophiles and peddling miracle diabetes cures to weigh in with his own brand of stupid.
In his mind, it's the victims' fault for not going to their prayer circle armed to the teeth.

They would rather die than violate one of God's commandments. And they did.

After all, innocent people getting shot to death is just collateral damage when it comes to scoring political points and chasing gun humper votes. It's people like huckleberry dipshit here who represent everything that is wrong with this country.

And that folks-------------if you think outside the box------------- not one fore thought of the consequence-------just have a gun and it will solve the problem------------that's why 88 human beings are killed with a gun in this country everyday, everyday.

(1,521 posts)These are my people. My white, white people.
I wish that I could say that the first time I heard this meme was from Charles Cotton, NRA board member. Or that the 2nd time I heard it was from Mike Huckabee.
But alas I'd heard this from a co-worker already. When I explained to him that no one went into churches armed throughout most of Christian history he looked confused and asked, "Who passed that law?" I explained that it really wasn't a law but a custom--a tradition that was even honored for the most part in the Middle Ages.
He seemed shocked and confused--muttering that many people go into church with concealed weapons. As if this somehow made it okay. I grew up Catholic. Even now, after having lost my faith, the idea of someone entering a church with a weapon of any kind is deeply shocking. But this is Texas. It was only a few months ago that some old redneck that couldn't bear to leave his gun at home dropped it in church and it went off. Fortunately, the bullet didn't strike anyone.
I wasn't shocked by my co-worker. I wasn't shocked by Charles Cotton. I wasn't shocked by Mike Huckabee.
This is our world now. We have a certain minority that believes that if we were all armed all the time that there would be no more mass shootings.
I doubt they've really thought about what our world would look like if we all carried all the time.
But it has become the new norm to blame the victims of these shootings for not having put themselves in the position to return fire.
In March of 2000 there was a fictional interview between Duke (a fictional character in Doonesbury based loosely on Hunter Thompson) and Larry King. It went like this:
DUKE: That's exactly right. Thank you, Larry, for saying that so well. KING: That's a major story. What about guns? A lot of talk about gun policy in America. It's the current rage. Clinton is even in on the dispute with the head of the NRA. Where do you stand?
DUKE: Yes, you know, I'm not -- I'm not going to be popular right now except with the NRA. Hold on a second. Has that check cleared? It has? OK, let me tell you. I'm going to take a strong stand here. I think mandatory gun ownership, simple safety issue here. We require seat belts. Why not side arms?
I believe every American should be...
KING: Everybody should have a gun?
DUKE: Yes. We should -- every American should be in a position to return fire, you know, in their day-to-day life. That's -- and according to the NRA mailing, if you know someone's armed, it prevents a lot of misunderstandings. At least they get resolved very quickly. A brief exchange and you're on your way to your next class or whatever. That's my personal belief, as long as that check clears. (I got this off an archived CNN site)
Back then, I'm sure everyone on the right and left thought it was crazy. Now, at least in some circles, this is considered sound reasoning.
So very sad. So, so sad.

(4,213 posts)We only know what happened. If others were carrying concealed weapons in that church it's possible even more people may have been killed.
This insanity has got to stop. There are more incidents like this in our supposedly civilized society than in most countries in the world.
To them it seems a concealed weapon should be taken everywhere. Aboard a plane, to the grocery store, to daycare, the Super Bowl, church...
The logic is just inane.

(12,655 posts)a gunfight in a church is obscene.
i would extrapolate that to anywhere people are going about their lives-having shootouts in malls, grocery stores, restaurants, etc is obscene.
huckabee and his ilk don't present to me as being real christians.
the people of charleston seem to represent authentic christian teaching in their response to this. i don't know what huckabee is.

(2,983 posts)Seems that there's something very wrong with that idea. I don't really believe one way or another, I don't follow any particular religion... but those that do, tend to find their places of worship sacred, at least, to them. The idea that people should be armed in a temple, church, mosque, or place of spirituality or religion is... well, frankly, I find it despicable.
Thou Shalt Not Kill.
What part of that line suggest that "Christians" should be carrying guns in church? What about turning the other cheek, not judging, what about mercy and love and all that stuff Jesus talked about? I am a recovering Catholic, but even now, I shudder at the idea of someone bringing a gun into a church. Where people bring their infants for baptism, where people go for funerals, for weddings, where they go to be closer to their God.
Weapons do not belong in churches. I don't care if it's a bad guy with a gun or a good guy with a gun, they need to leave their damned guns at home. Do we have to start hiring security guards and getting metal detectors for churches now? For fucking churches?
These kinds of crimes... I don't know how you find justice for them. Death is too quick a punishment - and frankly, letting the criminal off too easy.
If there is a God, I really wish it would hit Huckabee in the ass with a lightning bolt when he says shit like this. If there is a God, I wish it would stop these assholes from shooting people in church. I wish a lot more things of this being, which, when it comes down to it, is why I can't really believe anymore.
Still... I can't help but hope that, if there is such a being as God, it has a special place in hell reserved for the likes of Huckabee.

HUCKABEE: I dont know anyone in America who is a more effective communicator [than David Barton.] I just wish that every single young person in America would be able to be under his tutelage and understand something about who we really are as a nation. I almost wish that there would be something like a simultaneous telecast and all Americans would be forced, forced at gun point no less to listen to every David Barton message. And I think our country would be better for it. I wish itd happen.
