LINCOLN The first national donation was announced Friday in what is expected to be a high-dollar and high-profile fight over the repeal of Nebraskas death penalty.
The Proteus Action League, an Amherst, Massachusetts-based social justice group, donated $400,000 to help a group seeking to block a petition drive to hold a public referendum on capital punishment.
This support will be like rocket fuel to the campaign, said Danielle Conrad, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska, which announced the donation.
Conrad, a former state senator, said the national contribution also illustrates that the world is watching to see whether the historic repeal of the death penalty by the Legislature is sustained.
