Federal officials find 8 infractions at Florida monkey farm

Source: AP

LABELLE, Fla. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture found eight instances of non-compliance with the federal Animal Welfare Act at a southwest Florida primate breeding facility.

Primate Products Inc. on Wednesday released the USDA report to the News-Press (http://newspr.es/1JkPLi9 ). Company officials told the paper they expect to be fined for the infractions. The USDA report sets a timeline to correct each problem and outlines future standards.

The USDA launched the investigation after meeting with an animal welfare group, which said an undercover worker found sick and injured monkeys living in inhumane and unsanitary conditions.

The video from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals showed workers holding monkeys with protruding rectal tissue by the tails, animals in feces-covered cages, monkeys without working water dispensers, and primates with broken bones and exposed wounds.
