Rick Santorum Tells Pope Francis To ‘Leave Science To The Scientists’ On Climate Change
Source: Think Progress
On June 16, Pope Francis is expected to release an encyclical letter on the environment, the Catholic Churchs strongest statement to date on the moral issues associated with climate change. Its a move that has environmentalists very excited and one GOP presidential nominee less than thrilled.
During an interview with a Philadelphia radio station on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum a devout Catholic said that while he loves Pope Francis, he thinks the Pope should leave discussions about climate change to scientists.

Unfortunately for Santorum, asking Pope Francis to leave science to the scientists is a tricky request, because while the Pope is the current leader of the Catholic Church, he also happens to have a masters degree in chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires. Francis isnt the only famous Catholic to have expertise in science as Scientific American pointed out in 2013, the Jesuit order has a long history of producing men with background in both theology and science. If the Catholic Church had always eschewed science, the 17th-century Catholic priest Giovanni Zup might have never discovered the orbital phases of Mercury, or the 19th-century priest Benito Vines might have never been able to create his method for forecasting hurricanes, which formed the basis of the modern early warning systems we use today.

In the past, Santorum has referred to climate change as not climate science, but political science, claiming that global warming has no basis in a real understanding of the world. That runs counter to the 97 percent of actively publishing climate scientists that agree that the climate is warming due to human activity.

(31,464 posts)I fault the people who continually vote for people like this dumb fuck.
As with most politicians, Rick Santorum is only in this race to make a buck. He'll get a book deal, his speaking fees will go up. He doesn't give a crap what comes out of his mouth, as long as it makes him some cash without actually having to do any real work.

(930 posts)that is not a good sign (even if it's just Ricky). Next thing we'll be hearing from oil industry CEO's like Chevron's John Watson (what a miscreant), saying exactly the same thing. If industry CEO's are willing to ignore the Pope, publicly or not, then in my view there is no institution, body of law, politician, international tribunal, the U.N., et al., that is going to stop the continued extraction and burning of carbon.

(6,891 posts)explode when the Pope says that their religion should be about compassion and stewardship of the planet. I can't imagine what they'd do if Jesus suddenly showed up and said something critical about the love of money.

He is from my state of Pa. and I can't stand him. There is nothing good about rickey and my state soundly kicked him out of the senate. It was a landslide beating he took. That was pleasant anyway.

(217 posts)Santorum has not won an election since 2000.
How much longer will he attempt to feed his ego (and wallet) by shouting crazy shit from in front of the cameras?
As long as we pay attention, and point cameras at him, we play right into his game.
Fuck him, his opinion, and his political party of hate and ignorance.

They sure used the old jackass, cough, cretin, enough when he railed against abortions for no scientific reason. Repugs just have no moral basis, so they spin in the wind and constantly refute their own lies.
