Boat with more than 400 aboard sinks in China's Yangtze River

BEIJING -- The official Xinhua News Agency says a passenger ship carrying 444 people has sunk in the Yangtze River in southern China.

Xinhua says seven people have been rescued so far, and that further rescue work is under way. The agency says the boat was going from Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it sank at about 9:28 p.m. Monday night.

Xinhua says the boat was carrying 397 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 42 crew members.

My ship had only our group of 16 Western passengers. The rest were Chinese.

It was an excellent ship. Can't imagine what happened to make it sink.

making sounds underwater as they were trapped in the ship will still be alive when rescuers reach them. The majority of them are 50-80 years old.

So many ship sinkings world-wide this year!
