An amazing story. Always admired Bruce Jenner for his dedication in winning the Olympic Decathlon in 1976, the year my daughter was born.
Now admire her courage to finally acknowledge and live her identity. To say it must have been tough over so many years is an understatement.

(2,903 posts)I was married for 16 years when my husband came out to me about his cross dressing. I know first hand how devastating this news can be.
I give Bruce props, he says he told Chris he liked to cross dress sometimes so at least she had a little warning. I had none and felt that I had been lied into a marriage. Having this come out in Hollywood is one thing, dealing with it in small town Midwest was not fun.
After staying for a year and going to counseling I left and moved away.

(21,478 posts)There are no easy answers for you or others when this happens. I guess it just is what it is. I have now had the worst year of my life here in my mid-60s when the long-term relationship of the person I expected to spend the rest of my life with decided to go elsewhere with someone else. Still trying to pull out of it, but at least it's a beautiful sunny day here. Hope it is where you are, too.

(3,212 posts)About twenty years ago, a good friend's husband came out to her as gay. Well... she caught him lying about things and eventually he confessed.
It was absolutely devastating to her. She doubted herself, her judgment, her femininity, her friends (did they suspect?) and more.
I decided then that if gays didn't have to stay in the closet, this would never have happened to her, so you could say that I initially became a supporter of gay rights because of the victims married to gay men. Of course, I eventually realized that I fully supported gay rights for the actual men and women who were having to hide in the closet, as well.
I realize cross dressing and homosexuality are not the same thing, but both can be very devastating to the spouse who finds out that their partner is not who they thought they were.

(2,256 posts)Born in Greendale, Indiana,[2] Hill's battle with cancer became public when the NCAA agreed to allow Mount St. Joseph to play Hiram College two weeks prior to the original game date so Hill could play.[3] The location of the game was also originally moved from Hiram's Price Gymnasium to Mount St. Joseph's Harrington Center so that Hill would not have to travel the over 300 miles from Cincinnati to Hiram. However due to public interest in the game, it was later moved from the 2,000 seat Harrington Center to the 10,250 seat Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. [4] She raised US$1 million for pediatric cancer research with a Cincinnati telethon for The Cure Starts Now Foundation.[5] The Foundation has raised US$1.1 million thus far.[6][7]
Wheaties has honored Hill with her picture on its cereal box.[8]
Hill's family signed her up for hospice care on December 1, 2014.[9]
After Hill played in four games and made five layups,[10] Mount St. Joseph basketball coach Dan Benjamin announced that she would not play in future games but would like to stay on as an honorary coach.[11]
On January 7, 2015, Hill served as Assistant Coach for Mount St. Joseph University women's basketball team.[12]
On February 6, 2015, Hill was given an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree by Mount St. Joseph University.[13]
On March 4, 2015, she was named to the all-conference first team in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. "This award is being presented to Lauren in recognition of her courage and outstanding leadership," said conference commissioner Chris Ragsdale.[10]
On April 5, 2015, she was given the Pat Summitt Courage Award.[14] She died on April 10, 2015 at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.[15][16] A public visitation and memorial service was held on April 13, 2015 at the Cintas Center with a private funeral and burial scheduled for April 15, 2015. (406 posts)Piss on this calculating payola shithead and his POS moron-celebrating "family".
Congratulated for his athleticism. Give us a f**king break. This was timed like Trey Gowdy going after Hillary.
We've ranted many times that Jenner and his brood are a strong component of the payola culture that has permeated our media in the endless corporatist effort to dumb us down to even worse levels so we'll be content with whatever piss-down-economics Republican fueled America feels like handing us.
RIP Lauren Hill

Lauren Hill, inspirational college basketball player, dies following brave fight against cancer
Lauren Hill, the college basketball player whose cancer battle captured the countrys attention and raised millions of dollars to fight the disease, has died. She was 19.
Hill was diagnosed with terminal cancer during her senior year of high school. In the fall doctors told her that she had just months to live the inoperable tumor on her brain growing with each passing day but she beat those odds, playing in the season-opener for Mount St. Josephs and earning a spot on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conferences first team.
But it wasnt her play that earned her accolades, it was her fight. Hill dedicated herself to raising money to help others fight the disease that was taking her life Diffused Intrinsic Pontine Giloma. As of last week, she had raised more than $1.5 million for that cause.
Through Laurens fund-raising and advocacy efforts she not only became a spotlight on the lack of funding for cancer research, but she most certainly has become a beacon guiding researchers for years to come, Brook Desserich, co-founder of The Cure Starts Now, Hills foundation, said on the groups Facebook page.

(2,437 posts)This is nothing but a ratings grab. Lauren's story was more of an inspiration.
If ESPN wanted to honor the LGBT community, Renee Richards would've been a better choice.

I would point out that ESPN honored Michael Sam last year.

(1,807 posts)But Caitlyn has it all - supportive family, lots of financial resources, no worries about kicked out of her home.
There are plenty of kids out there in the midst of transitioning who have _nothing_ yet do it anyway at great personal costs. That's bravery. I'd love to have them find an unknown high school or college athlete making a similar decision and award it to him or her.
