John Kerry injures leg in bicycle crash

Source: Associated Press

GENEVA — Secretary of State John Kerry was helicoptered to a Swiss hospital Sunday after a bike crash outside of Geneva, where he had been holding nuclear talks with Iran’s foreign minister.

Kerry suffered a likely leg injury, but did not lose consciousness, State Department spokesman John Kirby said. The top American diplomat was in stable condition.

Kerry suffered the accident near Scionzier, France, about 25 miles southeast of the Swiss border. Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with his motorcade at the time.

Kerry was transported to Geneva’s main hospital HUG, where he was being evaluated, Kirby said.

And, since he lost several family members (his father, his ex-wife) and valued colleagues (Teddy Kennedy) to cancer, and survived his own cancer scare, I have no doubt that the Pan-Mass Challenge (which benefits the Dana-Farber cancer center, I believe) was and is personal for him.

Don't get me started on the outrageously shallow, lazy and irresponsible media coverage of the 2004 campaign.

Are you on a discussion board in your home country, like you are here? (There must be a lot of boards and bloggers there.) You must be quite the fiery partisan -- or does no French politician quite engage your sensibilities the way Hillary does?

And he's not only walking fine now (for a 97-year-old with a steel rod in his thigh, and after lots of physical therapy), but he's back on his bike! Of course, it's just a stationary one (we don't let him out on the road anymore), but he does 20 miles per day on it.

It's hard to keep a cyclist down! JK will be fine.

Whether biking or windsurfing, he has spoken of how that relaxes him, clears his head, and essentially let's him return to things with a fresh mind. In addition, it is likely why he can endure that schedule, always looking healthy and fit. It might also be part of how he deals with all the pressures with the humor and good nature he has.

It does not sound like he was doing anything particularly dangerous. As a Boston Globe person posted he road the 211 mile day in the pan mass bike race 11 times.

This was exactly what it was called - an accident. Consider that Hillary Clinton was sidelined a few times with accidents. The worst, far worse than this, was her concussion. She was not doing anything athletic or dangerous, she fell.

Kerry is said to be still attending the anti ISIS meeting remotely. Fortunately, his intelligence and eloquence aren't impacted by his broken leg.

It will be interesting to see when he can travel again
He does have the SOS plane and even if he has to use a wheelchair, he could attend meetings ... or push others to relocate them to Boston. He was very fast on crutches when he had them as a Senator after surgery.

.. that his hip surgeon was flying to Geneva to check him out before allowing him to fly.

That must have caused some rescheduled surgeries.
