Lincoln Chafee to announce presidential run on June 3
Source: Politico
Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee will officially enter the presidential race on June 3, a source with knowledge of his plans told POLITICO.
Hell make the announcement in a speech hes scheduled to deliver next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the George Mason Center for Politics & Foreign Relations in Arlington, Virginia. Following the announcement, Chafee will travel to New Hampshire on June 4 for a previously scheduled event with local Democrats in Grafton County.
Chafee, who became a Democrat in 2013, has made Hillary Clintons support for the invasion of Iraq the chief rationale for his primary challenge to her. As a senator and member of the Republican Party in 2002, Chafee voted against authorizing the war.

(54,068 posts)I'm sure it's a disqualifyer for most Dems. I don't give him a snowball's chance. But my gut (the same gut that supported Hart in '84, Gore in '88, and Clark in '04, and never ever backs a winner this early in the game) tells me he's the real deal.

(131,107 posts)and have a similar 'gut' as you, STILL for Wes Clark, and 'vocally' supporting O'Malley. I'm almost SORRY for the candidates I support!

(7,865 posts)Economically he is actually more conservative than some of the New Dems and Hillary. I do admire his courage in that he voted against the Authorization for use of force in Iraq as a republican, but he still isn't going to get my support.

(39,171 posts)he won office as an independent, switched parties and decided to forgo a second term due to abysmal public polling. His announcement was met here with a mixture of bafflement and derision.
We can do much better.

(7,865 posts)I'm not as much a fan of this one
He voted against the war in iraq which I admire, particularly as a republican
He is for free trade, eliminating the estate tax, and voted for privatization of social security and for a bankruptcy bill that worked against people and in favor of banks.
In more than a few ways he is more economically conservative than Hillary so ultimately I would not support him.

(49,999 posts)I admire his willingness to openly defy the Repubs, but on trade and education he still leans to the right.

(27,850 posts)..for his primary challenge to her."?
He voted against the resolution to go to war with Iraq...I get that.
However, MOST Democrats voted to go to war with Iraq,
based solely on the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld lies about WMDs & Saddam Hussein having a part in the 911 attacks.
How could Hillary Clinton have known that Bush et.al. were lying about Iraq?
Is that the only thing HRC has done that he disagrees with?
As other DUers have stated on this thread,...Chafee is for:
--Free Trade (agreements)
--Elimination of the Estate Tax
--Privatizing Social Security
There is no way in hell that this guy will get the Democratic nomination, IMO
