SPRINGFIELD Unionized state workers are taking steps to head off a lockout or a strike threat under legislation being pushed by the union representing 38,000 employees.
The proposal backed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union is aimed at countering concerns that Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner will lock employees out of their jobs or force a strike when the current labor agreement expires June 30.
"The governor seems to be focused on a confrontation," said AFSCME Deputy Director Mike Newman.
Contract talks between AFSCME and Rauner have been tense in recent weeks. Memos distributed by the union show the governor is seeking a wage freeze as well as other significant concessions, including increased health insurance costs.

(16,104 posts)Chief elected officials hate unions. They expect to just do things to people as they see fit, not have to listen and negotiate. They really really hate AFSCME!

I never thought I would be thankful for Madigan and all the power he wields in Springfield, but I am!

(30,761 posts)He is co-sponsoring this legislation. We are supposed to be attending the same event. If he is there, I am going to show him this article from the Pantagraph and ask him about the legislation.
If I learn anything, I will add it to this thread.
