(Reuters) - A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Nepal on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, causing people to run out of buildings in the capital Kathmandu and shaking structures in the Indian capital.
The quake, which struck near the base camp for Everest, was measured at a shallow depth of about 10 km.
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck on April 25, killing at least 8,046 people and injuring more than 17,800.

That earlier 6.3 quake was further south than the bigger one and all the aftershocks
CNN is reporting that buildings damaged by the April 25th quake have now collapsed. With more than 8000 people already killed by that last one, those poor people must be terrified right now.

But that is in fact what we do. I know the Foreign Service takes a lot of shit from everybody, but we do disaster response pretty well...
I expect they'll have all checked in within two hours.

We have a nurse friend who just returned from two weeks in Nepal, yesterday. A bunch of others who went over to provide aid have been trickling back all week. So many all over Nepal were injured, it's very hard to comprehend the help that nation needs. We've already sent more money than we could afford last month...

But, yeah, I'll probably be in Kathmandu or Kolkata in a week because they're going to need people. Oy.

(9,688 posts)not strictly speaking an aftershock-separate earthquake
different epicenter (eastern Nepal, near Namche Bazaar and Everest) and now rated 7.3-7.4
followed by an aftershock, 30 minutes later, at M 6.3
Same zone, of course

(3,746 posts)A major earthquake has struck eastern Nepal, two weeks after more than 8,000 people were killed in a devastating quake.
The latest earthquake hit near the town of Namche Bazar, near Mount Everest.
The US Geological Survey said it had a magnitude of 7.3. An earthquake on 25 April, centred in western Nepal, had a magnitude of 7.8.
The latest tremor was felt as far away as the Indian capital Delhi, as well as Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
