Oklahoma passes bill allowing designated school staff to carry guns

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - School districts in Oklahoma would be able to designate an employee to carry handguns on school property under a bill approved on Wednesday by the state Senate and sent to Governor Mary Fallin.
Backers said the measure that easily passed in the Republican-dominated legislature would promote school safety while opponents said having the firearms on campus could put students and teachers in danger.
Fallin's office was not immediately available for comment on whether the Republican governor would sign the bill into law. She has backed expanding gun rights in the state.
The bill allows school boards to choose a school employee to be trained as an armed security guard or reserve peace officer. The training would be paid for by the school district and allows the designated employee to carry a handgun on school grounds.

(5 posts)It would be Soooooo much better if the school had to call 911 and wait for an armed officer to show up and take care of any emegency requiring an armed response. That's better than having someone on site.

(5,455 posts)The police officer and the security guard were outside having lunch and watching some students on the day of the shooting.
In some ways Columbine fundamentally changed how police reacted to a mass shooting in progress. Prior to Columbine, standard procedure tended to be to set up a perimeter, bring in SWAT and a negotiator and try to end things peacefully. Now police procedure is to engage a mass shooter as soon as possible, without waiting for SWAT or possibly without even waiting for backup.

The armed guard engaged the shooters and exchanged fire with them. When the shooters were shooting at the guard they weren't shooting at students. That is a good thing. The guard was also able to shelter several students behind his car and allow them to escape unharmed. The shooters ultimately chose to take their own lives as they thought the police were closing in. The sooner the bad guys think they are doomed, the better. Having someone on the scene that can respond to the threat faster than waiting for the result of a 911 call is a GOOD thing. Paranoid fears of a guard or policeman having an evil gun aside.
