CVS officially confirms plan to reopen stores burned in Baltimore riots
Source: Baltimore Sun
The CVS Pharmacy stores looted and burned by rioters in Baltimore last week will be rebuilt, CVS Health formally announced Wednesday.
The firm, which has nearly 30 locations in Baltimore and employs more than 500 people, said it also plans to donate a total of $100,000 to two funds established to help recovery from the riots the United Way of Central Maryland "Maryland Unites Fund" and the Baltimore Community Foundation "Fund for Rebuilding Baltimore."
CVS previously said it was working on rebuilding plans, while the city said the firm had committed to reopening. CVS Health President and CEO Larry Merlo on Wednesday called rebuilding the "right thing to do."

(26,316 posts)as its going to still hurt alot of innocent folks who will end up losing their jobs with companies that decide to just take the insurance money and abandon the area rather than rebuild and risk literally getting burned twice.

(30,250 posts)It's not as if the outcome was not predictable. Along with the peaceful protesters there was bound to be an element that would take advantage of the situation to loot and destroy. It happens every single time.

(129,361 posts)something like 400+ people were arrested. But as a note, if someone wants to "take" a city the size of Baltimore, you would needs tens of thousands of troops, and that is just ridiculous.
But it seems National Guard weren't needed for these looters in California -
Nothing to see there... just a "headache" and a "disturbance" from "unruly crowds".

(129,361 posts)It definitely doesn't excuse the behavior but it precisely illustrates the unequal application of "policing" based on who you are and what you look like, and the linked article's very carefully worded descriptions of what had happened, very obviously downplays the violent "behavior" in that case. And many of us wonder why?

It would be a reason to hold off the National Guard until the less-than-peaceful people got the looting and arson out of their systems. Sounds like a rope-a-dope strategy.

(30,250 posts)I don't think that she meant give them freedom to burn and loot. She was probably referring to the peaceful protests. The problem is that these type of protests always seem to devolve into mayhem.

(30,250 posts)I'm glad that people didn't lose their jobs and that the employees of both stores are temporarily working in other locations. The donated money is quite generous too.
That doesn't excuse those who burned and looted these stores and other buildings in the city.
