Pope Backs Equal Pay for Women

Source: PoliticalWire/National Catholic Reporter

Pope Francis backed efforts for equal pay for men and women who perform the same work, saying that continuing disparities in pay for women are a “pure scandal,” according to the National Catholic Reporter.

Said Francis: “Why is it expected that women must earn less than men? No! They have the same rights. The disparity is a pure scandal.”

Now, how about those female priests? As a matter of church policy, equal pay for women is second to nun.

So sayeth our Good Book!

This will give even more conservatives in the US more ammo to hate this dude.

Frankly, I am surprised that he is still alive, after taking on the Vatican Bank, and the Holey C burro-crats.

a no-brainer issue for the Wonderpope to try to sound progressive on, while he fights against same-sex marriage and LGBT rights in general.

One has to recognize the huge, centuries old burro-cracy that Frank is battling. The ingrained misogyny inherent in this group of power-hungry, old, mainly white men, has been around forever. (in church terms).

Frank-ly, I thought he was going to be offed just because he cleaned up the Vatican Bank. That cesspool of corruption, deceit, fraud, theft, organized crime, unbelievable grime, and existing for centuries of time, was, to my mind, immune to repair or cleansing. Yet, he fired or demoted the most powerful friends and allies of mafia, gun runners, drug dealers, and hardened criminals this world has ever seen. One reason why he has survived so long is that he is not buttoned up in the Vatican residence for popes. Instead, he lives in the common dorm with dozens of others, he eats only common food with them, and he is never alone with those within the Vatican who wish him harm.

To be sure, this is a very small step in the flight of stairs that would lead to equality of the sexes, but it is a first and welcome step. Speaking as a confirmed atheist, and former dunked RC brain-washee.

But we're not there yet. I give the Pope a little credit for this, along with several other of his proclamations. I know people here are upset with him about LBGT rights and about women in the priesthood, and those are good points. Still, he's way better than any previous pope I know of.

He's already said he does not support women in the priesthood, they need to stay second class. Isn't there something about a mote in your own eye...

...there is a definite dissonance when he talks his own organization, where he could begin real, long-overdue reforms as it regards women. While I'm not saying he could just snap his fingers and ordination would begin tomorrow, it is totally within his job description to get the ball rolling. He's stood up to a lot of people. Surely his own curia can't be any more intimidating.

But, anyway, Pope: Thanks for the support.

http://www.aauw.org/research/the-simple-truth-about-the-gender-pay-gap/

The pay gap has barely budged in a decade.

In 2013, among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 78 percent of what men were paid.

Women in every state experience the pay gap, but some states are worse than others.

The best place in the United States for pay equity is Washington, D.C., where women were paid 91 percent of what men were paid in 2013. At the other end of the spectrum is Louisiana, the worst state in the country for pay equity, where women were paid just 66 percent of what men were paid.

The pay gap is worse for women of color.

The gender pay gap affects all women, but for women of color the pay shortfall is worse. Asian American women’s salaries show the smallest gender pay gap, at 90 percent of white men’s earnings. Hispanic women’s salaries show the largest gap, at 54 percent of white men’s earnings. White men are used as a benchmark because they make up the largest demographic group in the labor force.

Women face a pay gap in nearly every occupation.

From elementary and middle school teachers to computer programmers, women are paid less than men in female-dominated, gender-balanced, and male-dominated occupations.

The pay gap grows with age.

Women typically earn about 90 percent of what men are paid until they hit 35. After that median earnings for women are typically 75–80 percent of what men are paid.

While more education is an effective tool for increasing earnings, it is not an effective tool against the gender pay gap.

At every level of academic achievement, women’s median earnings are less than men’s earnings, and in some cases, the gender pay gap is larger at higher levels of education. While education helps everyone, black and Hispanic women earn less than their white and Asian peers do, even when they have the same educational credentials.

The pay gap also exists among women without children.

AAUW’s Graduating to a Pay Gap found that among full-time workers one year after college graduation — nearly all of whom were childless — women were paid just 82 percent of what their male counterparts were paid.
