Senator Rand Paul moves to nullify new ‘net neutrality’ rules
Source: Reuters
U.S. Senator Rand Paul, a Republican presidential hopeful, on Wednesday introduced a resolution to block new regulations on Internet service providers, saying they would wrap the Internet in red tape.
The net neutrality rules, which are slated to take effect in June, are backed by the Obama administration and were passed by the Democratic majority of the Federal Communications Commission in February. AT&T Inc and wireless and cable trade associations are challenging them in court.
Pauls resolution, if adopted, would allow the Senate to fast-track a vote to establish that Congress disapproves of the FCCs new rules and moves to nullify them.
The move marks the most proactive position yet by Paul, a libertarian from Kentucky, on net neutrality, the principle that Internet providers should treat all Web traffic equally. The issue has grabbed national attention and prompted a record 4 million comments to the FCC, many of them from regular Americans calling to restrict Internet providers.

(469 posts)... matters far less to Rand Paul than the 4 million DOLLARS (minimum) that the ISPs will donate to his campaign if he can help them alleviate all the "pain" this FCC ruling will cause them.
Just imagine all the "red tape" involved in NOT creating a new, deeply tiered, internet paradigm. How will they ever survive NOT having to do all of that?

(12,041 posts)There are lots of libertarians who are computer nerds, they are the ones who really built the campaigns of both Rand and his father. While they are corporate tools for the most part, they are also very much in favor of an open internet. Net neutrality is one of the few government regulations they strongly support. Don't be surprised to see many of them start jumping ship soon.

(7,403 posts)Rand Paul, you have some explaining to do. All net neutrality does is to maintain the status quo. It was the providers wanting to line their pockets by making rule changes that forced the FCC to adopt these rules to maintain the internet as we know it. That is a very good thing.

(23,138 posts)It's pure right wing facism in action. There's nothing confusing about Net Neutrality rules, all it does it stop the predation of the Providers from slowing down the flow of information for everyone except a select few who will pay through the nose to get faster service. Rand is signalling that he's willing to carry water for the big guys and that he has no moral principals at all.
How craven! I didn't think I could dislike him more, I was wrong.

If he was a true Libertarian, representing all incomes, you'd think he would be all in on NN. Its not as if he is an anarchist, he still believes in some Gommint. Armed forces...courts...and of course the office of Pres (as long as he's the Pres)

(11,520 posts)Rand is such a moran, as mentioned already I suspect he'll lose support from a lot of libertarian computer geeks over this.

(2,301 posts)The Ron/Rand Paul base is heavily comprised of people who would likely find this position a deal-breaker. Then again, maybe they will think it's the cost of trying to establish their anarcho-capitalist utopia...
