GOP lawmakers seek photo ID requirements for Ohio voters

Source: Toledo Blade

COLUMBUS — Several Republican lawmakers in Ohio say they plan to introduce legislation to require voters in the swing state to show photo identification at the polls.

GOP Rep. Andy Brenner of Powell says the bill includes an exemption for residents who object to having their photo taken for religious reasons. He says the proposal also would provide free state ID cards to poor residents who meet a certain income threshold.

Supporters of the plan insist the photo ID requirements will help safeguard Ohio’s vote, though vote fraud cases in the state are rare.

Voter rights groups say the proposal ignores other potential election law changes, such as creating online voter registration.

So if you're too poor you aren't a citizen?

What bullshit. Jim Crow comes to the Union.

If your income is below a threshold, then you qualify for a free ID.

I still don't like it and don't trust Republican legislators at all.

2. Since voting is a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT and Ohio is MANDATING ID, it should be taxpayer funded.

People should not be on the hook for this at all.

If this is a requirement of the state, the state should provide any and all assistance FREE OF CHARGE to provide the IDs for their residents. The burden of these costs should fall back onto the GENERAL FUND OF THE STATE.

Voter suppression was a VERY popular subject and people were really fired up about it (this was when I lived in Memphis). In Orlando where I now live, people have stood in lines for hours for the right to vote. I sincerely hope that this will fire up the democratic base and get them to get out there and vote these GOP nuts out of office! This is the only way that we are going to stop this GOP attack on our constitutional rights, and know that this is certainly exactly what this is. They rant and rave about their constitutional rights and it is the exact thing that they are trying to take away, as usual.

The GOP are breathtakingly hypocritical - they don't even try to hide it any more. I hope to God between Bernie and Hillary they begin to expose them at every opportunity.

Shine on and for God's sake VOTE and take someone with you!

How can they require a photo ID for a mail in ballot? After a bad experience my first time voting in Florida, I now only vote absentee ballot.
