Senate OKs renewing Violence Against Women Act
Source: SC Herald Online
The Senate has passed a bill to renew the government's main domestic violence program.
The 68-31 vote to renew and expand the Violence Against Women Act sends the matter to the House, which is writing its own version.
The 1994 law is designed to protect women and children from abuse, and historically has been without controversy. But this election year, gender politics roiled the debate for weeks.
Democrats accused Republicans standing in the way and waging a "war against women."
But Republicans never tried to block the measure. Instead they proposed removing specific references to protecting gays, lesbian and transgender people, and capping the number of visas for battered immigrants.

(36,974 posts)Senate Passes Violence Against Women Act | The Senate just passed the third reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. Though Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) were attempting to water down the bill through amendments, they ultimately failed and the bill passed in its original form. The politicization of domestic violence isnt over yet, though the bill now moves onto the House of Representatives, where its already been emotionally debated. Republicans have already said that they will try to mirror the watered down language of the Senate amendment that did not pass.

(95,337 posts)Any republican who voted for the bill knew this was a hot potato that would impact anyone up for re-election voting against it.
My guess is the senators from Maine and Lisa Murkowski did vote for the bill.

Note: all five the republican female senators voted with the democrats (Ayotte, Collins, Hutchison, Murkowski, Snowe)
and ten republican male senators voted 'yea' too.

(9,154 posts)the article says it passed, but it didn't seem clear on whether it passed with the Republican excisions, or not.
