Rivlin and Netanyahu refuse to meet Jimmy Carter over his 'anti-Israel stance'

Source: Haaretz

President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have rejected a request from former U.S. President Jimmy Carter to meet during the latter's visit to Israel in the coming weeks, a senior official in Jerusalem told Haaretz.

The official said that Rivlin and Netanyahu rejected the request after inner consultations over the last few days between the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council of the Prime Minister's Office.

According to the senior official, the Foreign Ministry recommended that Rivlin and Netanyahu not meet with Carter because of what they termed his "anti-Israeli stance" over the last few years, particularly during the summer war in Gaza.

The senior official added that Carter has also requested to visit Gaza during his visit, and that Israel had approved that request.

Unfortunately, behavior like this is likely to earn them more "anti-Israeli stances" from larger numbers of people.

I keep thinking about all the public schools that are starving, and the children in poverty who are neglected and go to bed hungry most nights, and the single heads-of-households who are holding down more than one shit job just struggling to make ends meet... And we keep sending boatloads of money to these ingrates half a planet away...

By now, Jimmy Carter has earned favorability ratings that any active politician today would damn near kill for. Our former President is the most widely-respected of any ex-President. Nobody appreciated him when he was in office. They were pretty rough on him - at the time. But if you compare it to what current President Obama faces every doggone minute of every doggone day, there's really no comparison.

Jimmy Carter has been a quiet voice of sanity, wisdom, and principle. He put the concern for human rights at the front of the line as President. He's kinda like the conscience of the political world at this point. AND he expresses it through actions, not trying to shove some religious or CONservative moralistic dictates or mores of yesteryear down our throats now. He is a very noble man.

They can say whatever they want about the hostility of Jimmy Carter, but his character is already well known to the rest of the world. I guess the Israeli right wing's refusal to extend themselves to the former US President adds meaning to the term, "Limited Government."

This is a good man who actually achieved a peace deal in the Middle East

As for Netanyahu what do you expect from a shitstarter like him. I am personally becoming bored by his antics. This in sharp contrast to the utter shock that congress allowed him to make speech and didn't inform the president. Couldn't believe the insult

To be fair, Bibi wants Israel to be the defacto big banana in the middle east. It is a power-grab no matter what is needed to be done for the situation. Very sad...

Thanks for the welcome

I'm from Canada and I've been shaking my head over all this nonsense. Don't you think Bibi would be a little more apprehensive about biting the hand that feeds him? Or maybe it is true that he just wants Israel to be the most powerful in the region and wants to achieve it at any cost.
