10 San Bernardino deputies placed on leave after beating caught on video
Source: Los Angeles Times
Ten San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies were placed on paid administrative leave
Friday after TV news video showed them beating and kicking a suspect.
Sheriff John McMahon announced the move to place the deputies -- including a sergeant
and a detective -- on leave during a news conference Friday afternoon.
I am disturbed and troubled by what I see," he said. "It does not appear to be in line
with our policies and procedures.
He asked the public to have patience as the use-of-force case is being investigated.
Since the video was released, the sheriffs department has received numerous
threatening phone calls, emails and posts on social media, he said.

(9,214 posts)send me home and let the process happen? I think I would be in jail hoping someone could make my bail, then a trial.
No what needs to start happening is treating the cops like we would be treated, jail and trial. That "process" is good enough for us, it should be good enough for them. Let the cops set the example for why we should have faith in the system.
Edit to add: And mandatory drug testing for the cops after any questionable incident.

(26,549 posts)They have what's called qualified immunity. As long as they were acting in their official capacity, you can't sue the government employee. Instead, you can only sue the supervising government. (State police -> sue the state, sheriff deputy -> sue the county, etc.)
The theory behind this is the supervising government is fundamentally responsible for ensuring its agents behave according to the law. And you don't want Citibank suing individual IRS agents as an intimidation tactic.
The "real" penalty for the individual officers is supposed to be criminal prosecution. That, obviously, does not happen as often as it should.

(14,176 posts)It looks like they are taking this seriously,.
The problem, though, is that the LA County Sheriff's department has had a series of scandals both on the streets and in overseeing prisons that have failed to effect change in any significant way IMO. San Bernardino might do a better job--it's far less populated and the financial ramifications of a suit might mean more to them than the millions LA County paid out to means to them--but I'm not very hopeful.

Please respond with your own opinoin on this.
Do people who kick suspects in the head deserve to ever own or use guns again?
I'm just wondering what people think.
