Potential UK oil discovery in South of England 'significant'

Source: BBC

There could be up to 100 billion barrels of oil onshore beneath the South of England, says exploration firm UK Oil & Gas Investments (UKOG).

Last year, the firm drilled a well at Horse Hill, near Gatwick Airport, and analysis of that well suggests the local area could hold 158 million barrels of oil per square mile.

The North Sea has produced about 45 billion barrels in 40 years.

I'm not sure that people in places like Tunbridge Wells would be all that keen on having oil drilling on their doorstep.

What would be radical would be to leave it in the ground and commit to keeping the planet habitable for our descendants. I'm not holding my breath...so to speak.

... "Do you want oil wells or wind turbines on this land?"

And they'd choose the oil wells every time, because "wind turbines are just soooo unsightly."

If anything, wind turbines are an improvement to the scenery in places like The Fens, or off the shore of Essex.

That is, if there's any land left above water to farm bananas on once all the ice caps are fully melted.
