Officer Shoots Man After Rampage at Louisiana Airport
2 minutes

A law enforcement officer shot a 63-year-old man inside a New Orleans-area airport Friday after the suspect allegedly went on a bizarre rampage and attacked TSA agents with wasp spray and a machete, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said.

Normand said Richard White approached a security checkpoint inside the Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner just before 8 p.m. local time, and when he was challenged by a TSA agent he pulled out a can of wasp spray and sprayed the agent in the face.

White allegedly sprayed another male TSA agent with wasp spray and then pulled out a machete and struck a female agent, and then raced through the checkpoint, Normand said. The agent who was sprayed grabbed a piece of luggage to defend himself against the machete.

A law enforcement officer stationed at the airport shot White three times, once in the chest, the face and the thigh, Normand said. He was taken to the hospital and was "unresponsive," Normand said. One bystander was grazed by one of the officer's bullets, he said.

The TSA staff are unarmed at MSY and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff provides armed security at the checkpoints and facilities.

New Orleans airport attacker was mentally ill, had bombs

(Reuters)
- The machete-wielding man who attacked security agents at a New Orleans airport on Friday was carrying six homemade explosives and suffered from mental illness, officials said on Saturday.

Authorities said Richard White, 63, is hospitalized in critical condition after a sheriff's officer shot him three times during the airport attack. White's age was previously reported as 62.

"No one at this point in time has any notion of what triggered this behavior," Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said at a news conference.

"He is alive. We very much want the opportunity to talk to him. We're not sure that is actually going to happen.

Police: Suspect shot at New Orleans airport has died

KENNER, La. (AP)
— Police said the machete-wielding man shot at New Orleans' international airport last night has died.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office said in a statement that 63-year-old Richard Write was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon at a local hospital.

Sheriff Newell Normand said White — who was shot three times by one of Normand's lieutenants Friday after approaching a security checkpoint, spraying insecticide and brandishing a machete — was also carrying a bag loaded with six Molotov cocktails: six Mason jars with cloth wicks soaked in gasoline.

Normand said White chased a TSA agent while swinging the machete. They were heading toward Lt. Heather Slyve of
the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, who drew her weapon and fired three times.

January 2008 a pregnant police officer named Nicola Cotton was shot 15 times by a man with paranoid schizophrenia at a traffic stop. This incident drew attention to the lack of mental health services in our city. But how soon forgotten by Bobby Jindal who now is cutting Medicaid which includes the closing of one of our largest mental health hospitals. Southeast Louisiana Hospital is expected to close Oct 1 and 300 employees will be laid off. How can Nicola Cotton be forgotten so easily.
