Fragment from MH17 crash site supports missile theory - Dutch TV
Source: Reuters
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A metal fragment from the crash site of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 matches a surface-to-air BUK rocket, a Dutch broadcaster said on Thursday, supporting a theory that the plane was downed by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
The fragment was recovered by a Dutch journalist from the village of Hrabove several months ago near to where the plane was brought down last July, killing all 298 passengers and crew.
Dutch broadcaster RTL said it had had the shrapnel tested by international forensic experts, including defence analysts IHS Jane's in London, who said it matched the explosive charge of a BUK, a Russian-made anti-aircraft missile system.
The downing of the plane was a turning point in the conflict in Ukraine, which pits the separatists against Kiev's forces. Kiev and its Western supporters blamed the rebels for the incident and it stiffened the resolve of Western governments to impose sanctions against both leading separatists and Moscow.

There were reports of this well before MH17 was downed.

(10,849 posts)Somehow I doubt planes flying at 35,000 ft were giving Su-25's flying down in the dirt much cover, not to mention the Su-25 can barely manage Mach 0.82 flat out, on a good day, and a 777 can do 0.89.

(59,503 posts)You do not even need to have passed High School Physics or Algebra to understand that it makes no sense.
The passenger plane is flying higher and faster than the supposed Ukrainian jets. So, try to LOGICALLY state how you would select the time and flight path of the jet - even knowing the SCHEDULED flight path of the passenger plane. All this to have the passenger jet above the Ukrainian fighter plane at the likely moment the rebels would shoot at the Ukrainian plane.
It means that they have to estimate the exact time and place that they would shoot at the fighter and somehow have it happen just as the faster jet flew by at a higher level. Note that it also requires MISSING the fighter plane.
I am waiting for any algorithm you could come up.
The ONLY sensible variation of this is that in retrospect, once anyone in Ukraine discovered that the rebels were getting the capability to shot down a plane that high, the air space should have been closed to commercial navigation. ( In fact, it could easily have been assumed by Kiev that the rebels did not possess this capability.)

(3,982 posts)the MH17 went down where it was discussed and concerns were expressed.
It was not a coincidence that there was a Ukrainian airforce Jet nearby.
Personally I don't think a jet took it down, but it is documented that they were flying under passenger jets on the approach of bombing runs. It was foolish at best.

(35,317 posts)The area's been held consistently by the rebel forces since before the shoot-down. "Full access" has been granted repeatedly; "full cooperation" has been granted repeatedly.
And yet the cooperation and access has seldom been "full" in any meaningful sense of the word. Scrap's been hauled off, personal possessions have been removed, stuff's been piled together into mounds. Even in the preliminary official report there are rather large chunks of fuselage that are "analyzed" only through photographs because the investigators haven't and can't examine the actual pieces.
Yet it should be not so hard for the odd journalist to wander away from his DNR minders and controllers to the area to pick up something. Just pretend to be a zealot and you're clear. (But if you're OSCE, you need to get any area you're visited cleared well in advance and have an escort. Esp. useful when doing surprise spot-checks.)
