Rescued Florida dog now recovering in 'protective custody'

Source: AP

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A dog rescued after being shot and tied to railroad tracks in Florida has been released from a veterinary clinic to continue its recovery.

Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service posted a message on its Facebook page late Friday saying Cabela had "left the building to go into super secret, never to be revealed, protective custody." The 1-year-old mixed-breed dog was in hiding to "heal, socialize and begin her transition to a new life," the post said.

Tampa Police have said that Cabela was shot, tied to railroad tracks and left to die earlier this month because it wouldn't fight.

The Tampa Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1x6iItO ) that a Hillsborough County judge on Friday denied bail for two men accused of using Cabela for fighting.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone can be so cruel.

It bothers me when journalists and people refer to animals as "its," as though they are things versus living beings.

to animals, or other human beings for that matter. I don't have it in me and I can't get my mind around this mentality.

Poor little angel. I hope she has a long, happy life free of abuse and pain.

The initial reporting was premature. She still has her leg and was already walking on it when she left the vet hospital.

They're hoping the pieces will heal back together -- it's supposed to take about 6-8 weeks.

The Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service posted the following to its Facebook page:

Good news for Cabela, she has left the building to go into super secret, never to be revealed, protective custody. Hiding: to heal, socialize and begin her transition to a new life. Updates will be posted on her status in a timely fashion!

one of her rolling on her back with her head in the vet's lap with vet tech looking on. So once she has time to learn to trust her new people, she'll be able to relax and start enjoying being loved...

So glad she and the others there were found and rescued...

Authorities said Devlin and Bell gave Cabela to two 17-year-olds, who have been charged as adults with aggravated animal cruelty and trespassing. One teen also was charged with possession of a firearm.

But so heartening to know that Cabela is recovering , and that so many people -the police, and the judge, and the vet clinic and her new caretakers- came through. And, yeah, no bail for those low-lifes.

Good luck, Cabela, and thanks to the good people who will continue to protect him.
