Workers fired by a Costco supplier for union activity are pressuring the retail giant to stop stocki

Source: NY Daily News

BY ALBOR RUIZ

“Shame on Costco.”

That was the message that a group of workers — mostly Chinese and Latino women — delivered loud and clear Sunday, International Women's Day, at a rally in front of the giant retail store at 976 3rd Ave. in Brooklyn.

Costco is known as a pro-worker company, but according to these women, by continuing to do business with plastics conglomerate Reynolds, and Pactiv, a subsidiary company, it is tarnishing its reputation.

“ By continuing to do business with Pactiv and Reynolds, (Costco) is in violation of its own supplier code of conduct that expressly forbids it to contract with companies that violate labor laws,” said Wendy Cheung, of the Ain’t I A Woman?! Campaign, one of the rally’s organizers. The workers, many of them fired for attempting to unionize, are demanding that Costco take Reynolds products off its shelves.

“I was part of the first group fired by Pactiv in July 2010,” said Ai Jin Shi, who lives in Chinatown. “We wanted to unionize because we were working in sweatshop conditions, but the boss found out and I was fired after four years working as a packer.”

I wish there was a Costco close to our home.

I love the first season episode of "Modern Family" when Mitchell and Cameron go shopping at Costco.

Mitchell and Cameron are exploring the successful cornerstone of any modern family: the Costco. Actually, it was Cameron's suggestion, as Mitchell thinks it's a bit beneath him. (Yeah, you know where this is going. I'm single, and even I know.) Cameron feels that Mitchell is being too snobbish, but the diapers are supposedly a better bargain there. They even have a wine section. It's right next to the tires. A few eye rolls by Mitchell, and he's ready to leave. That is, until he discovers a paper shredder he really wanted for a great price. Suddenly, the place is heaven. They buy olives, since Claire needs them and they can't eat 3 one-gallon jars of them anyway. They can even buy a coffin there. (They can?) Mitchell realizes the store has everything you need from birth to death. They buy 4 huge boxes of diapers, a year's worth, along with a shed to put them in at the house, since you can buy those there as well. Cameron has created a monster.

Modern Family Season 1 Episode 3
Come Fly with Me

Phil pushes Jay to go out with him and fly his new model plane. While Manny takes time out to play with Luke, Gloria accompanies Alex in shopping for a dress. Mitchell and Cameron goes shopping at Costco, but Mitchell feels that he is too good to shop there. Later on, Manny ends up having a heart-to-heart talk with his sister Claire.

The closest one to me is probably 15 miles away. Have never been in one but it's on my "to do" list at some point (there are none in the city of Philadelphia).

Costco has alot more stuff than Wally World - although Wally's Sam's Club is closer to that warehouse model but still not as comprehensive as Costco's from what I have heard (I have been in a Sam's Club).

And that line was hilarious as was the train to get from one end to the other...

The article is similar, just a bit different.

We have several things we buy at Costco because they are much cheaper than at the chain grocery store. However you need to have room since pretty much everything comes in bulk and some things are cheaper store brand at chain grocery store as Costco carries name brand instead. Next however is they have gotten more and more of their name brand (Kirkland) which are cheaper than big name brand stuff.

It used to be things averaged $10 (except for big things of course), get 10 things, spend $100. Now it is up to $15, but again food and stuff everywhere is higher. When we started shopping, we got a couple things, then next time a couple more things, building up the pantry.
