Finland's national radio airs readings of complete Quran
| March 8, 2015 | Updated: March 8, 2015 2:13pm

HELSINKI (AP) — Finland's state radio channel YLE is broadcasting readings of the entire Quran in Finnish to improve knowledge of Muslim culture in the Nordic country.

The 60 half-hour readings are accompanied by comments from the translator of the Islamic holy book and Imam Anas Hajjar of Finland's Islamic Society.

The chairman of the organization, Mohammad Hussein Omar, on Sunday described the readings as a good way to help people understand the religion and Muslim customs better.

There are an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 Muslims in Finland, which has an overall population of 5.5 million. The country has only one building constructed as a mosque, in the early 1940s. Other Muslim prayer rooms or mosques are former schools, cinemas or municipal halls.

77934 words / 30 hours = 2598 words/hour.

So that sounds reasonable for an hour, or even rather generous. Leaving room for the commentary they mentioned.

(On edit: that's 43 words/minute, so it leaves a lot of time for commercials or public service announcements too)

The world's response to Muslims is a bit backward. There should still be an heir of inclusion but I think Islam and all world religion for that matter ought to be required to also teach social inclusion into modern society. Gone should be the days of walking into a temple and being made to feel superior to the world for not being a sinner or infidel. This only perpetuates Christians thinking they are a member of some parasite nation that lives underneath the requirements of modern society or Muslims feeling permitted to establish a system of governance on top of modern society.

I was raised in a highly Religious household and was told from a very young age that we were members of the spiritual Israel and that we tolerated the laws of whatever land we were in but always needed to work with any other spiritual 'citizens' we encountered to undermine the grip our government kept over us. This really gave way to most of my childhood being in a secluded mind cult that kept me loathing the world. Talking to many of my ex Muslim friends, their Islam is no different and just as much a foe of freedom as fundamental Christianity is.
