Exclusive: Apple gives shuttle bus drivers a raise
Source: San Jose Mercury News
Apple is giving a raise to the shuttle bus drivers who transport its employees to and from work, the latest in a series of steps to improve conditions for the service workers who keep Silicon Valley humming.
Apple will fund a 25 percent increase in hourly pay for its shuttle bus drivers, who are employed by contractors including Compass Transportation and Royal Coach Tours, a company spokeswoman told this newspaper. In addition, drivers who work the split shift -- which requires them to drive routes in the morning and evening -- will earn a higher hourly wage to make up for the downtime, the spokeswoman said.
... Wages for drivers will rise 25 percent on average, depending on what they were making before and their seniority. Greg Gallup, chief operating officer for Apple contractor Royal Coach Tours, said the iPhone maker's shuttle drivers will now be among the highest paid in the valley.
The raise marks another step forward for Silicon Valley's service workers, who cook, clean and maintain security on tech campuses with few of the industry's lavish perks. Last week, Apple announced it would hire many of its contract security guards as full-time employees entitled to the same benefits as other workers, echoing a similar step made last year by Google. What's more, shuttle bus drivers for popular Silicon Valley contractors Loop Transportation and Compass Transportation have joined the Teamsters union, which is negotiating for better pay and benefits.
