Another Fabrication: O Reilly Never Witnessed the Killing of Nuns in El Salvador

Source: Media Matters

Blog 1 hour and 55 minutes ago-

OLIVIA MARSHALL:

Bill O'Reilly has claimed repeatedly that he witnessed the execution of nuns while reporting in 1981 on the civil war in El Salvador, an apparent fabrication that is at odds with both history and what O'Reilly himself has said about arriving in the country after the event took place, according to new information unearthed by Media Matters.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Between 1980 and 1992, a civil war raged in El Salvador between the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) and the government of El Salvador. On December 2, 1980, four members of the Salvadoran national guard raped and shot "three American nuns and a layworker." The tragedy ''did more to inflame the debate over El Salvador in the United States than any other single incident,'' according to a 1993 State Department report. After the death of Silvia Arriola, a member of a religious order killed six weeks after those four churchwomen, "no priests or nuns were killed in El Salvador for more than eight years," according to Dr. Anna Lisa Peterson, a professor of religion at the University of Florida.

O'Reilly has spoken on several occasions about his time covering the Salvadoran civil war as a CBS correspondent in 1981, suggesting at least twice that he witnessed the murder of the churchwomen. On the September 27, 2005, edition of his talk-radio program The Radio Factor, O'Reilly said, "I've seen guys gun down nuns in El Salvador." And on the December 14, 2012, edition of his Fox News show, O'Reilly spoke of telling his mother that "I was in El Salvador and I saw nuns get shot in the back of the head."

However, O'Reilly could not possibly have witnessed the murder of the churchwomen if his own timeline is to be believed. The former CBS correspondent only arrived in El Salvador in 1981, as he mentioned on the February 22, 2002, edition of The O'Reilly Factor, saying (according to Nexis transcript), "Before I went to El Salvador in 1981, I talked with some experienced Latin American experts, people who had seen the brutal wars down there for themselves. I had never been in a war zone before, so I wanted some prep."

Seriously, it says a lot about the over-blown fears and megalomania on the right. They always picture themselves as soldiers in an apocalyptic battle. Living Out Loud!

The truth is malleable and can be molded to serve your selfish purposes. Only people equipped with a conscience feel bad about such gross abuses of honesty. On the rare occasions when sociopaths are found out, rather than being contrite, they just double-down and lash out.

O’Reilly Apparently Contradicted Himself on Witnessing Nun Killings; Fox Responds
by Matt Wilstein | 5:12 pm, February 25th, 2015

Another day, another apparent embellishment on the part of Fox News star Bill O’Reilly. Following Mother Jones’ reports about his “war zone” stories in Buenos Aires and a former Washington Post editor’s claims that he lied about his experience covering the JFK assassination comes a new discovery from liberal watchdog group Media Matters that dates back to O’Reilly’s time spent in El Salvador in the early 1980s.

On multiple occasions, including a 2005 radio segment and a 2012 episode of The O’Reilly Factor, O’Reilly told a story about seeing nuns “get shot in the back of the head” in El Salvador while he was there covering the civil war there for CBS News.

But as Media Matters points out, the incident he described, in which Salvadorans raped and shot four U.S. nuns happened in December 1980. O’Reilly did not go to El Salvador until after he was promoted to CBS News correspondent in 1981, according to his own book, The No Spin Zone.

Curiously, Media Matters pointed to another interview O’Reilly gave to WVVH-TV’s American Dreams Show in 2009 — between the other two instances — in which he appears to admit he arrived in El Salvador “right after” the killings occurred.

The worse it will get. Doesn't he realize that the more he tries to cover up these lies, the more people are going to dig up on his other lies? He can't keep his mouth shut, and all his denial and blaming everything on those damned "liberals", the more he will be exposed on his other lies, and this guy is one hell of a great liar. Hell he man not even be who he claims to be!

It is the cumulative effect of all these lies that do the most damage. He should have come clean on the original sin and the media would have declared "Mission Accomplished" and moved on.

Instead, he went into attack mode and the media will now dig deeper and expose more of his BS.

A single drip is manageable, but enough drips become a flood.
