Fewer People Registering For Susan G. Komen Races
Published on 19 April 2012
by Jamie Stengle
For years, Katie Sanchez participated in her local Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, raising money annually to honor her aunt, cousin and a male friend all breast cancer survivors.
But when her local race rolls around this fall, she won't be there. She already donated her entry fee to Planned Parenthood.
"Pretty much everyone I walk with has decided to do something else," she said.
Sanchez and many other Komen supporters have abandoned the nation's largest breast-cancer charity since news emerged in late January that it had decided to stop making grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer-screening. Komen soon reversed that move following a three-day onslaught of criticism.
Organizers of individual Race for the Cure events 5K runs and walks that account for most of the charity's fundraising have seen participation decline by as much as 30 percent. Most also saw their fundraising numbers go down, although a couple of races brought in more money.

Why would any progressive person of any sex would have anything to to do with that?

(51,559 posts)I would have thought it would be more. I don't know anyone who is doing that 5K any more. I sure won't do it again. This year I sent my money to Planned Parenthood.

(71 posts)My company always heavily sponsored the event. The coordinator sits 2 cubicles down from me. This year she pulled down all the posters and ads throughout our building (and sign up pamphlets), and the company withdrew it's support and sponsorship. We as a national behemoth routinely raised 2 to 3 million annually for Komen.

(62,530 posts)They can go scratch this year and every year as long as they continue to limit womens rights.
I have 3 women in my family that are survivers of breast cancer: my mom, my sister and my aunt.
I will now give directly to breast cancer research and tell komen to fuck off.

(62,530 posts)plus I have issues with AVON as well. With the type of cosmetics they sell. They aren't very enviromentally friendly. I don't think they test on animals anymore so that is at least a plus.

(135,425 posts)I've been lazy, throwing out questions about them in the vain hopes that someone else will do the "Let Me Google That For You" work on my behalf!
OK, I'll step up and give it a go, myself! It's apparently a WALK, not a run, for starters. It lasts two days.
This is their "How the funds are spent" statement:
I also expanded their "Where the Money Goes" buttons and I didn't see Planned Parenthood on any of 'em for their donation lists for last year--so if the idea is to get the cash to them, this effort may not help: http://www.avonwalk.org/why-we-walk/where-the-money-goes.html
It is open to men, though (I would have thought so, as men can get breast cancer--ask Montel Williams):

Maybe someone should get organized and fire up a bunch of fun runs for PP? I'll bet they'd go over well!

(1,412 posts)George Bush, Nancy Brinker, hand in hand. I never supported Komen for these reasons. She is a corporate shill.
snip;
So most people would be shocked to find that the Komen Foundation helped block a meaningful Patients Bill of Rights for the women it has purported to serve since the group began in 1982.
Despite proclaiming herself before a 2001 Congressional panel as a "patient advocate for the past 20 years," demanding access to the best possible medical care for all breast cancer patients, Federal Election Commission records show the Komen Foundation and its allies lobbied against the consumer-friendly version of the Patients Bill of Rights in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Brinker then trumpeted old friend George W. Bush in August 2001 for backing a "strong" Patients' Bill of Rights, while most patient advocates felt betrayed.

(26,079 posts)Hospitals, sororities and other college groups, etc. It would be pretty easy, I bet, to get any of these or a local running store to help organize a breast cancer 5k, and give money to either a local breast cancer organization, or a regional or national one that actually gives money to research.
Maybe even a regional Girl Scout council could do this?

Any charity that is so focused on defending branding obviously doesn't have their priorities straight.

Rick Perry's Planned Parenthood Revenge: Kill Health Care For Poor Women- The War on Women continues.
This is why Rick Perry can never be President of the United States. Mimicking his fellow Merck buddy Nancy Brinker, Perry decided to punish Planned Parenthood by going forward with a state law banning treatment for any condition at a clinic with any ties to abortion providers, specifically:
But under a state law taking effect Wednesday, Henry and other eligible women won't be able to get care at Planned Parenthood clinics which treat about 44% of the program's patients or other facilities with ties to abortion providers, meaning those women will have to find new health-care providers.
