Raiders, Chargers plan possible shared Los Angeles-area home

Source: AP

The Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are planning a shared stadium in the Los Angeles area if both teams fail to get new stadium deals in their current hometowns, the teams said in a joint statement, adding another layer of complexity to a possible NFL return to the region.

The proposed $1.7 billion stadium would be in Carson, 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and home to the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team.

Thursday night's statement says the teams have tried and failed for years to find stadium solutions in Oakland and San Diego, and without new agreements in those cities their hands will be forced.

"We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason," the statement says. "If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises."

Seems as if private funding (unmentioned in the article, but reported elsewhere) for a Los Angeles stadium is a doable do for the Chargers; it adds an interesting wrinkle in their current ongoing demands for public funding for a new stadium in San Diego.

The owner of the St Louis Rams has plans to build a stadium in the LA basin and move the Rams there. The area cannot support 3 NFL teams.

Financially both teams are better off long term working with AEG to make Farmers Field happen or even working with Ed Roski on the Irwindale stadium. Those are basically shovel ready ...

In fact one of them might be better off working with Kroenke on his Inglewood project , even if the Rams stay in St Louis

This is simply a leverage move to make the taxpayers in SD and OAK pony up. Won't happen

St. Louis dictates everything re NFL to LA. If the state of MO bends over for Kroenke, no Rams to LA --
Meaning Oakland makes the first move. Irwindale most likely, AEG less likely because AEG project extension is closing. SD will follow only after a 2016 ballot measure fails.

If Kroenke moves the Rams first, SD will have no choice but move immediately. Like Baltimore Colts, moving trucks at night style. They can't let two rival into their backyard basically

I live in San Diego about a mile away from the Charger's Stadium and it looks fine to me.

They have a field. They have seats. Everything meets code. Seems fine.

If they want to have a shiny stadium to overcharge people to see large men run into each other and cause brain injuries in L.A. then I wish them luck.

At least they won't be using our money in San Diego to increase the wealth of the owners.

Let them share a new stadium on a former Carson landfill with their "hated" rivals.

San Diego is a lovely city and can do well without a pro football team.

BULLSHIT. More greedy owners wanting the taxpayers to pay for their shiny new baubles. Fuck them.

The owner of the Rams is part of a group that wants to build a n NFL stadium on the site of the former Los Alimitos race track, they have a ballot initiative that has already qualified.

The initiative will be placed on the Inglewood municipal ballot in 2015.

On edit: I now see there are two sites in the works : The Hollywood park and AEG proposal.

...the Chargers relocate.

....and no one really wants the Raiders back.

This is just them making a last ditch effort to get the cities foot the bill for the stadium.

Right now, the Rams are the number one contender with two options, the AEG proposal and the old Hollywood Park race track. Who knows...maybe both proposals unify on a plan so neither has to foot the whole bill.

Raiders get a temporary stadium to play out of, while home field in Oakland gets a much needed upgrade, to which they move back to,
Don't really see what Chargers get, except to play into LA market, which they seem to be default team for LA given LA has no franchise.
However, if LA gets a franchise, there is a ready made stadium. This could aid whole migration effort.
Raiders move back, Chargers move back to San Diego and perhaps pocket some kind of investment pay-off (still don't see their benefit)
