Fears for London schoolgirls believed to have fled to join Isis in Syria
Source: The Guardian
Counter-terror police have issued an appeal for information about three London schoolgirls who are believed to have fled to Islamic State-controlled Syria.
The three friends left their homes in east London last Tuesday and caught a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, from where they are feared to have tried to travel to the frontline in Syria.
...snip...
Counter-terrorism officers said the three girls left their homes before 8am last Tuesday providing their families with plausible reasons as to why they would be out for the day.
Instead they met and travelled to Gatwick airport. They boarded a Turkish Airlines flight, TK1966, which departed at 12:40pm to Istanbul, Turkey and landed at 6:40pm local time.

(30,813 posts)I can only imagine what they've been told to lure them over. I remember what it was like to be a teen-aged girl.
Young girls love romance and adventure and are eager to fabricate the illusion of such, and can do so when given the slightest morsel. They pay no heed to the bad things they hear ("people just don't understand!" , and these bad things can even heighten the sense of purpose and romance.
The saddest thing is that they will lose this innocence in such an irrevocable way.

(18,184 posts)I think Isis attracts psychopaths but teenage hormones and delusions are also part of the mix.
The kids who go over there don't know much about history or religion. They are groomed over the internet by predators and lured into a "Lord of the Flies" type of existence which for some must be exciting.

That's not a mistake. That's a decision. Traveling to a foreign country requires money and plannning.
And I don't want them to get raped or sold into slavery. But we all know it's probably going to happen. Either that, or they are going to be given weapons, they are going to try to kill women and children, and they are going to get killed by a Kurdish bullet or a Jordanian bomb or a US drone strike. They had the information, and they made a bad choice. They are going to live, or die, with the consequences.

(13,920 posts)I don't know about these young woment in specific, but with a slight twist in fates, I know people who effectively dont have that information, despite its prevelance.
Start from a religious fundy background. Teach your kids that the librul media, with all its science and "evidence" cant be trusted, that everything it says is lies. Teach them that godlessness is running rampant and ruining the whole world. Teach them that they are better, different, and should look down on, avoid, and otherwise scorn all those who don't share their beliefs. Teach them that dying, or better yet killing, for your faith is the highest honor.
Its not really a huge jump from there to joining a holy war, if you can get past the yahweh/allah divide. We have among us a small but still numerous group of people who have been taught to ignore all evidence and hate.
christx30
(6,241 posts)They've been in operation for months. My 8 year old has gathered they are bad people just from seeing reports on them on the Daily Show (I usually try to turn it off when there's something too heavy, but the kid's got a good brain).
When did they leave for their trip? If it was this week, it was after the much publicized burning of that Jordanian pilot. "I want to be a part of that. It's a cause that speaks to me."
That's what it comes down to. They see the destruction and death. Blowin shit up. Killing people. And they want to do it too.
So they deserve absolutely no sympathy. They are going to die. Hopefully before they hurt anyone else.
quakerboy
(13,920 posts)Cults have been killing people for a whole lot of centuries.
And yet people are still able to be drawn in by new ones.
I'm not saying that these girls were justified. What I am saying is that I have known people who were raised in such extremist households here in the US that they could easily be drawn into a similar circumstances. Your kid is getting a good education that will serve him or her well to think things through, but not everyone gets that start in life.
I'm not saying its right. I'm saying it is unfortunately understandable. If you have been hammered from infancy to disbelieve whatever the media says, taught that its all a conspiracy to try and rob you of faith, then when the news comes and says X happened, which will challenge your faith, its not too surprising that some of them would say "no, that's a lie" or "I'm sure it was justified, the news is lying" We watched the whole republican establishment do the exact same thing leading up to the Presidents Reelection. Evidence be damned, it was all lies and Romney would rise supreme. Right up to, and in some cases past, the election results coming in.

(8,200 posts)What I read was that this is a distinct possibility. I do think that countries should consider revoking their passports for aiding the enemy since the Islamic fanatics have declared war on the West. One of Europe's biggest fears is the return of those who have joined the ranks of radicals and what they may do to innocent people thereby justifying some constructive action.

These poor young girls. My youngest at 15-16 was so incredibly stupid. Although her defiance exhibited itself a in.wild behavior that at worst landed her in the back of a police car, I know that if.a young girl was religious and.came across the apocalyptic theology of ISIS and felt they could join the new calibrate, their similar lack of impulse control and judgement will now result in a catastrophic nightmare.
