Levon Helm, Woodstock resident and drummer, the former leader of The Band, has died at age 71.

Helm died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"We lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family and his musicians have visited him," said Larry Campbell, Helm's longtime guitarist and band leader. "As sad as this was, it was very peaceful."

Campbell, who has played with everyone from Bob Dylan to BB King, said his greatest honor was not only helping lead Helm's band, but knowing him.

(Not to sound crude but Mr. Helm rounds out the 3. I am amazed how it came basically within 24 hours. Dick Clark, Jonathan Frid-Dark Shadow fame. and now Mr Helm. Three people who basically brought job to the world.)

had the pleasure of seeing him since the early 70's in teeny clubs, and big festivals. From the Last Waltz to a show in a bowling alley with about 20 other people there. Loved him. Love his version of the Springsteen song "Atlantic City"....... my favorite male singer (Sanger, really) ever.

I remember seeing that observation a while back and don't recall it's origin, but how very true. The man sang with so much soul, and his drums were somehow etched into the song's message as much as the words themselves. Levon once explained that for him his voice was just another part of the drum kit. Now that he has laid his sticks down for the last time, there's one more reason to cry.

3 close friends died this month. Two of my very best friends are in their last days and one of my favorite people in the world in Levon.

Please just turn it off for a while okay?

In all fairness I just lost my grandmother and my sixteen year old dog, but damn, I've been listening to this guy with and without the band for many, many years. By all accounts he was a kind and gentle person. He will be missed.
