Islamic State Releases Video Purporting to Show Behading of 21 Egyptians in Libya
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - Islamic State released a video on Sunday purporting to show the militant group beheading 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in Libya.
In the video, militants in black marched the captives, dressed in orange jump suits, to a beach. They were forced down onto their knees, then beheaded. The video appeared on the Twitter feed of a website that supports Islamic State.
A caption on the five-minute video read: "The people of the cross, followers of the hostile Egyptian church."
Thousands of Egyptians have traveled to neighboring Libya in search of jobs since an uprising at home in 2011, despite advice from their government not to go to one of the most dangerous countries in the region.
Before the killings, one of the militants stood with a knife in his hand and said: "Safety for you crusaders is something you can only wish for."

Saudi Arabia Bulldozes Over Its Heritage
The $21 billion project, launched in 2011, is designed to meet the challenges of accommodating the millions of pilgrims who visit Mecca and Medina every year. Around 2 million currently visit during Hajj alone, the annual pilgrimage that happens during the last month of the Islamic calendar. But activists charge that the recent destructions are part of a much wider government campaign to rub out historical and religious sites across the Kingdom.
Over the last few years, mosques and key sites dating from the time of Muhammad have been knocked down or destroyed, as have Ottoman-era mansions, ancient wells and stone bridges. Over 98% of the Kingdoms historical and religious sites have been destroyed since 1985, estimates the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation in London. Its as if they wanted to wipe out history, says Ali Al-Ahmed, of the Institute for Gulf Affairs in Washington, D.C.
Though the Saudi rulers have a long history of destroying historical sites, activists say the pace and range of destruction has recently increased. A few months ago, the house of Hamza, the Prophet Muhammads uncle, was flattened to make way for a Meccan hotel, according to Irfan Al Alawi, executive director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation. There have even been rumored threats to Muhammads tomb in Medina and his birthplace in Mecca.
<snip>
Wahhabism, the prevailing Saudi strain of Islam, frowns on visits to shrines, tombs or religio-historical sites, on grounds that they might lead to Islams gravest sin: worshipping anyone other than God. In recent years, the twin forks of Wahhabi doctrine and urban development have speared most physical reminders of Islamic history in the heart of Mecca. The house of the Prophets first wife, Khadijah has made way for public toilets. A Hilton hotel stands on the site of the house of Islams first caliph, Abu Bakr. Famously, the Kaaba now stands in the shade of one of the worlds tallest buildings, the Mecca Royal Clock Tower, part of a complex built by the Bin Laden Group, boasting a 5-story shopping mall, luxury hotels and a parking garage.

Sunni Islam -- you're talking about a sect that out-numbers the entire Christian population. I had a recent discussion with a poster with the same avatar so forgive me if you weren't the same person. Just in-case, I mentioned that ISIS uses "Sykes-Picot" heavily in their propaganda even though Wahabbis were the most unhappy & violent within the late Ottoman empire. The Saud family is exactly who I meant.

These truly are utterly despicable people. Just loathsome.
I think the reason this may have happened is that the Empire of Snuff Flicks needs the Libyan oil money, and these guys were working on non-Snuff-Flick oil projects. So they are doing this to try to scare people off from any oil jobs not controlled by the Snufflisistis.

(29,322 posts)Given that Arabian economies are built of migrant worker & exploitation. Seems like an all too common case of getting shitting on by everybody.
C. Exploitation & Abuse
Human rights activists and journalists have done considerable work in exposing
the abuses faced by TCNs from poor countries, whose situation hasbeen likened to indentured servitude or slavery.47 While service members and
TCNs may work side by side on U.S. bases, a complex web of entities often
shields the U.S. government from responsibility for TCN workers. Prime contractors
hire subcontractors (often foreign companies) to fulfill specific task orders.
Subcontractors in turn use recruiting agencies to find and bring workers
from other locations. In practice, there may be even more subcontractors and
other intermediaries involved. Between the links in the contracting chain, responsibility
is often obscured or displaced, facilitating abuse and exploitation.
These problems are, of course, endemic to many situations of labor migration
around the world; for TCNs, however, the employer is ultimately the U.S. government.
The plaintiffs allegations in Adhikari v. Daoud, a lawsuit that has been
pending in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Texas since 2008,
illustrate some of the most egregious practices concerning TCNs. The plaintiffs
in Adhikari, mostly deceased and proceeding through kin, were Nepalis allegedly
promised jobs in luxury hotels in Jordan that paid $500 per month.48 They were
hired by a Nepali labor recruiter working on contract with a Jordanian job brokerage
company and transported by another Jordanian company to Amman, all at
the behest of Daoud and Partners, a Jordanian firm that was in turn subcontracted
by KBR.49 After each paying up to $3,500 in recruitment feespaid for by
loans charging exorbitant interestthe plaintiffs arrived in Jordan only to have
their passports taken away.50 They were then put in an unprotected convoy
bound for Al Asad Air Force base in Ramadi, northern Iraq.51 Along the way,
Iraqi rebels seized a dozen of the Nepalis; they beheaded one and executed the
others with gunshots to the head.52
http://www.uclalawreview.org/pdf/62-1-3.pdf
So treated like shit by the despicable people working on behalf of the US government, given the kidnapping took place near Ramadi, were executed by despicable Iraqi rebels who likely are part of IS now.
One thing about IS propaganda, snuff flicks is very much a part of it. Similar reasons why both them & Saudi Arabia do the whole beheading and displaying their body on a crucifixion in the public square. Fear & intimidation, however their intended goal of the message is very tricky to figure out given it is very bizarre sometimes. Kidnapping an immigrant worker, lying about the fighter angle to be used in propaganda over something involving Egypt is sad on so many levels. It isn't about scaring off people when it comes to oil jobs because if their hired in those parts, they don't have a choice to work the oil job.

(14,779 posts)Libya has invaded Egypt in the past (yes, distant past, but the invasion did occur). That invasion was more a war of liberation, i.e. the Libya Army moved in to install its king as Pharaoh, but most Egyptians supported the change, thus the Libyan invasion succeeded.
Egypt is a country that has four avenue of being attacked. First is from Palestine, this is the traditional route of the people who conquered Egypt when Egypt did NOT want to be conquered. Israel hold Palestine and does not have the population to occupy Egypt, thus will NOT invade Egypt given most Egyptian would oppose an Israeli occupation. When Egypt has been conquered from Palestine, it was by either someone in present day Turkey or Iran. They have the population base to occupy Egypt, Palestine is just the road to take Egypt.
The Second route is via the Sea. Any such force tends to be weak and hold just the Nile Delta. This is what the "Sea People" of about 1000 BC did. France under Napoleon and then Britain did the same in the late 1790s. The French overthrew a very corrupt ruling group and then told the Egyptian they were all Moslems (an out and out lie). When the Egyptian found out the truth about the French, they embraced the British, who were careful to rule through native Egyptians when they ruled Egypt. Both the French and British arrived by ship, but they hold was always weak for that reason.
The third route was up the Nile from Ethiopia. The Sudan is in the way and divided by the many rapids (Cataracts) on the nile in the Sudan. Each requires an army to walk around the Rapids and get on new boats on the other side. The last Cataracts is where Egypt starts and was the largest. Do to the need for new ships on the other side of the Cataracts any Ethiopian Invading Army had to have support of the people of the Sudan AND Egypt. Thus such invasions only occur when Egypt looked to Ethiopia to overthrow whoever was ruling Egypt at that time.
The fourth route is from Libya. This is a quick march to the Delta and then up the River. The problem is Libya has a small population base, thus can NOT field an army to take Egypt UNLESS Egypt wanted to be conquered.
Ethiopia and Sudan have NOT had the unity or strength to launch an attack on Egypt for the last 100 years. Israel protect Egypt from any invasion from Asia. The Sea is dominated by the US, so no invasion of Egypt from the Sea is possible (except by the US and the US clearly did not want US Troops in Egypt). Thus Egypt was secured EXCEPT for Libya.
Gaddafi was a close ally of the Moslem Brotherhood. If a Coup occurred in Egypt, Gaddafi could intervene to restore the Moslem brotherhood. The Egyptian Army would have dissolved in front of such an attack. The officer corp would be willing to fight, but the enlisted ranks, mostly draftees from the peasants and working class of Egypt who support the Moslem Brotherhood would have gone through the motions of fighting (Barely obeyed orders) and when captured and separated from their officer join the invading Libyan Army.
This was clearly the fear of the US if and when the Egyptian Army did a coup against the Moslem Brotherhood. Thus Gaddafi had to go. That Libya would be left in Chaos was unimportant, the prize was who controlled Egypt. Thus the NATO Bombing campaign in support of groups funded by Saudi Arabia against Gaddafi. The US would have liked a stable government is clear, but it had to be a stable government with no ties with Gaddafi or the Moslem Brotherhood. Given a choice between a Libya is chaos and Gaddafi in charge, Libya in Chaos was preferred by the US.
Notice Gaddafi had to be killed and all resistance by his forces destroyed before the Coup against the Moslem Brotherhood President of Egypt.
Gaddafi died on October 20, 2011:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_Gaddafi
A year and a half later the Coup against Morsi occurred:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Egyptian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat
I suspect the Egyptian Army did not even start to plan a coup till Gaddafi was gone. As long as it was possible for Gaddafi to intervene in support of Morsi, any coup had a good possibility of failing. Once Gaddafi was gone, they was NO military threat to an Egyptian Coup.
Now, Morsi was only elected in June 2012, but it was clear by 2011 it was the Moslem Brotherhood who was going to win any election and sooner or later the Moslem Brotherhood (or whoever became President of Egypt) would have to take on the Egyptian generals and their corrupt allies who are the ruling elite of Egypt. Thus the election had to be held, but then whoever was elected had to be overthrown.
Egypt had overthrow Mubarak in February 2011 and that same month the Civil War in Libya started. This gives you an idea of what was at stake. In many ways it was clear by February 2011 the Egyptian Enlisted ranks would NOT support Mubarak. Thus an invasion of Gaddafi to remove Mubarak would have had massive support among the Egyptian People. That threat was clear and Saudi Arabia responded by funding Radicals who wanted to overthrow Gaddafi. This was more to protect Egypt then to to attack Gaddafi. As the situation in Egypt deteriorated and it was clear that the Moslem Brotherhood would prevail in any elections, efforts were made to undermine that election (Funded by Saudi Arabia) and to secure Egypt from any Libyan invasion by over throwing Gaddafi).
Egypt was the prize, Libya was the price to be paid. Once Libya was no longer united it was NOT capable of launching at attack on Egypt, no matter how much support in Egypt such an invasion would have. Thus Gaddafi had to go. As long as Egypt was secured to the West under Sadat and later Mabarak, the west did not care who ruled Libya, whoever did had to sell their oil to the west so no one cared who ruled Libya. Once Egypt was up for grabs, Gaddafi had to go. Thus Gaddafi was removed from office even before the Moslem Brotherhood won the Presidency of Egypt. Once the threat of Libyan intervention was gone, then preparing the grounds for the coup could begin, and notice that started even BEFORE Morsi was elected President of Egypt.
Just a comment that the reason Gaddafi had to go, was Egypt. The fear was Libya could intervene in Egypt if such intervention was asked for by the Moslem Brotherhood. If Gaddafi was gone, no intervention was possible, thus to secure Egypt, Gaddafi had to go.

The Clinton supporters should pay the GOP, because there would be no way enough people to win an election would vote for her otherwise.
Besides, she already said she would go into Syria, which is what she will do as president. But let me guess, during Clinton's term, when HER war with Syria blows into a mess that makes Iraq look like Halycon days, especially as Russia is Assad's ally, then it will all be Obama's fault.

(34 posts)The Syrian & Egyptian miaphysites and monophysites were as much a target of the crusader barbarians as the Jews & Muslims were, and were massively represented as soldiers in Zengid & Ayyubid armies against the invaders. Not that the khalifah state group seems interested in any history that wasn't written by Ibn Tamiyyah, but it's still a sloppy narrative when they've been fairly slick about their propaganda efforts lately.
