Anti-Violence Groups Plan '50 Shades of Grey' Protests

Source: NBC Los Angeles

Moviegoers planning to see "50 Shades of Grey" are probably comfortable with the idea of whips and ropes, but they may have to add picket signs and loudspeakers to their list. Several organizations are planning protests of the best-selling novel’s on-screen adaptation set to hit theaters Friday, citing everything from the book’s “degradation and subjection of women” to worries about a negative characterization of sadomasochism.

A group of dominatrices will protest the film and denounce its depiction of their community Thursday and Saturday nights at the Regal Cinemas at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles. "It perpetuates the worst stereotypes of the S&M community - that it’s about violence, it’s about rape, and kidnapping," said Tara Indiana, a retired professional dominatrix who was in the business for 25 years.

Indiana said that many "doms" were conflicted with the series’ widespread popularity. On one hand, they hated S&M’s portrayal in the story. On the other, it helped propel their way of life into the mainstream. But Indiana decided that the misrepresentation was too much and she couldn't stay silent. "The most offensive is this kind of storyline that the master, Christian, is damaged and has these issues that through the love of this virginal woman over the course of the book, is fixed," Indiana said.

"Part of me just hates it because it’s bad porn and I hate bad porn," she continued. "Real S&M is about trust and consent and it’s empowerment, particularly for women." But other groups feel the film portrays violent and misogynist content is a way that promotes violence toward women, and protests are planned for the Regency Theater showing in Westwood.

fandango says pre-sales are highest ever for an R-rated movie ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Tracking $75M-$85M Four-Day Weekend – Friday

Mid-day industry estimates point to Universal/Focus Features’ Fifty Shades Of Grey tracking for a potential February opening-day record of $26 million-$30 million today, which could beat the month’s previous opening-day champ, Mel Gibson’s 2004 Passion Of The Christ, which made $26.6M in its opening Wednesday. Over the four-day Presidents Day holiday, Fifty Shades Of Grey is looking at $75M-$85M per industry tracking; some analysts tell me it could even do higher than that.

'Fifty Shades Of Grey' $8.6M Thursday Night Preview Racks Up Records Reported earlier by Nancy Tartaglione, Fifty Shades of Grey has already amassed $28.6M in a total of 34 foreign markets with No. 1s in 33. It’s looking at an overseas five-day bow of $100M-$130M; in sum, a total global bow could hit $215M.

Many were using 2008’s Sex And The City as an opening comp ($57M FSS), but with that comp blown out of the water Fifty Shades is resembling Twilight at this point in terms of numbers. That film, though PG-13, pulled in a first day of $36M and a four-day of $74.2M during the pre-Thanksgiving 2008 period. Twilight counted an audience that was 75% female. Fifty Shades author E.L. James has mentioned in interviews how she has been greatly inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s vampire tomes. http://deadline.com/2015/02/fifty-shades-of-grey-kingsman-weekend-box-office-1201372952/
