Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown (D) will become the first openly bisexual governor in U.S. history when Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) resigns Wednesday.

An open LGBT governor has never been elected, although New Jersey did have an openly gay governor briefly in 2004, after Gov. Jim McGreevey (D) came out as gay and admitted an affair with a man he had appointed to a key job. He resigned three months later.

Brown is married to husband Dan Little; she has publicly discussed her bisexuality in past campaigns. She is already arguably the highest-ranking bisexual elected official in America; Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) became the first bisexual member of Congress in 2013. There are about 525 openly LGBT public officials in office at all levels of government, according to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund. Most of them are Democrats, said interim executive director Denis Dison, and only about 20 are Republicans.

1. I like Kate Brown. I met her before she was elected and liked her very much so I was happy when

she became Sec of State. So while I feel very badly for Kitzhaber I'm pretty happy to see Kate Brown as Governor of Oregon.

Do you think those self-righteous righties who were all incensed because of John's "live in first lady" are going to flame out when they hear this about our new Governor? I'm guessing they probably will, but as I like to say, "Careful what you wish for, you might just get it."

Me, I wish John hadn't resigned, hated to give The Oregonian that satisfaction, but when the Dems threw him under the bus, I knew he was doomed. He's done a lot for Oregon through the years. I'm hoping they don't take his portrait down in the Capitol Building, like they did Neil Goldschmidt's. Neil deserved it. John doesn't. Just MHO.

4. This part I find disturbing

Even as Kitzhaber's personal troubles were mounting late last month, she was facing questions about having written to the FCC endorsing Comcast's merger with Time Warner Cable after having received campaign contributions from Comcast -- a letter that was reportedly written in large part by a Comcast lobbyist. Comcast has given Brown $9,500 since 2009, according the National Institute of Money in State Politics.

Records obtained by The Verge show that Secretary of State Brown's letter to the agency was almost wholly written by a Comcast Government Affairs specialist. After a conversation with Brown’s staff, the Comcast official sent Brown a letter he had prewritten for her that even included her typed sign-off, name, and title. Brown’s office sent the Comcast document — containing just three sentences with new or altered language — to the FCC emblazoned with the official seal of the State of Oregon.

Late Tuesday afternoon, I received a call from the Governor while I was in Washington, DC at a Secretaries of State conference. He asked me to come back to Oregon as soon as possible to speak with him in person and alone.

I got on a plane yesterday morning and arrived at 3:40 in the afternoon. I was escorted directly into a meeting with the Governor. It was a brief meeting. He asked me why I came back early from Washington, DC, which I found strange. I asked him what he wanted to talk about. The Governor told me he was not resigning, after which, he began a discussion about transition.

This is clearly a bizarre and unprecedented situation.

9. No, Brown did not throw Kitzhaber under the bus

For all we know that story is factually true. Brown was in DC and was called by the governor to meet with him. What was said during the meeting and how it was said may be contestable, but given how this has come about I tend to believe Brown's account.

It was the call from the Oregonian and from other high ranking Democrats in Oregon including Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek and Treasurer Ted Wheeler that forced his resignation (Brown didn't take a stance).]

6. I just heard that on the Ed Show and my first thought was -

so what? Why is it important for me to know whether the woman is bi, straight, gay, trans or something in between? I hope the day arrives when people are just people and it's not necessary to identify us by sexual preference.

I mean, what does it really matter if you like guys or gals? What bearing does it have? May as well ask what kind of vegetables they like.

Just like straights, gay people can be horrible hateful people. Bisexuals can be racists. Trans people can be fascist. It really doesn't matter what their gender or sexuality is, does it?

Maybe one day we'll judge people by the content of their character. Period.
