Congressman Matt Salmon Suggests President Obama Is 'Faking' War On ISIS
Source: Right Wing Watch
Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., is joining other Republicans in expressing doubts that President Obama actually wants to defeat the ISIS terrorist group, telling the Family Research Councils that he is wary of voting for the Authorization for the Use of Military Force because he fears Obama has no intention to fight the so-called Islamic State, also called ISIL.
Salmon said in an interview on Washington Watch that Obama doesnt want to defeat ISIS because he is afraid of upsetting Iran, which is currently bombing ISIS forces in Iraq.
This president, I believe, does not want to do anything to make Iran mad, and so I think if he did what it takes to topple Assad and destroy ISIL, it could upset his applecart, Salmon said. I dont believe that the president really wants to prosecute a war that would truly destroy ISIL, I dont think he has any intention of doing that it. I think he wants to micromanage his generals to the point that its a political front, it is not a real prosecution of an effort to destroy ISIL.

(1,986 posts)The Pentagon claims this, but Iran denies it. Which liars should I believe?

It is a deadly foe of ISIS.
This guy is incoherent. Or else he wants to replace the governments in Damascus and Baghdad...with what, I don't know.

(45,984 posts)Mr. Salmon doesn't have either his facts or his logic straight. I guess that makes him a typical Republican.
Without regard to whether putting boots on the ground is a good idea or not:
- I don't think President Obama will make any of Iran's leaders mad if he makes a move against ISIS. The Sunni members of ISIS think the Shiite leaders of Iran are heretics. The two groups have no love for each other.
- Beyond that, I presume that Mr. Salmon wants to take action against ISIL. How is that to be done without giving the Commander-in-Chief authority?
Of course, perhaps Mr. Salmon really wants to go to war with Iran. In that case, perhaps he should introduce a resolution of support for ISIL. He'd really grab some headlines if he did that.

(1,009 posts)The people who want to fake a resolution to conflict are the GOP people. The people who don't want wars to end are exactly the members of the GOP.
Remember, it was Obama who ended OBL, not the Bush Administration or the GOP.
You want to see an end to ISIL? Give Obama his AUMF. (Personally, I'd rather just leave the place, pay Jordan, Israel, Iran and maybe Turkey several gazillion dollars and tell them to fix it. Now, you'll get an alliance of nations that have been traditionally foes, and perhaps we'll get them to agree to put together a coalition party to handle the political vacuum there. And then, after ISIL is gone, throw a lot of good money into the area to provide infrastructure rebuilding.)

(14,173 posts)You just knew that there'd be a slant like this from the GOP. I don't get Fox News up here, but I'm sure they are raising this same "issue" on there.
I'd not be surprised if they actually denied Obama the authorization. Or at the very least tried to get some kind of back room compensation on another bill in exchange. They are scraping the barrel to find some reason, any reason, to not allow Obama to get the inevitable "war president" bump. (which is sad and another topic)

(39,405 posts)Our government is in no way afraid of Iran.
At most, they are an irritant that fully obey transnational corporations and bankers.
We are concerned about them getting nukes because that would make it easier to continue to stay their own course.
Or more likely, our government isn't that concerned about the nukes, they're just looking for an excuse to sanction Iran and make them fall in line.
