Argentine leader formally accused of bombing cover-up

Source: AFP

Buenos Aires (AFP) - Argentine President Cristina Kirchner was formally accused Friday of shielding Iranian officials from prosecution over a 1994 bombing at a Buenos Aires Jewish center, prosecutors said.

The prosecution move advances the case against Kirchner that was being pursued by late prosecutor Alberto Nisman before he died mysteriously on the eve of congressional hearings on his accusations.

The accusation now goes to the judge in the case, Daniel Rafecas, to decide whether to call Kirchner to make a statement.

Kirchner has been under fire since Nisman turned up dead after accusing her of covering up the involvement of high-ranking Iranian officials in the deadly bombing in exchange for oil.

Argentina has its own politicians in prosecutors' clothing - the same prosecutors, in some cases, that have covered up the 1994 AMIA bombing from the beginning. I should also note this is an election year there.

This whopper has already been rejected by every judge to whom it's been submitted (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/03/judge-turns-away-alberto-nismans-case-against-argentinas-president). Plus the fact that the idea itself came from the country's infamous State Intelligence (http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/06/us-argentina-prosecutor-idUSKBN0LA1S620150206?rpc=401) - the same agency responsible for many of the ransom kidnappings that took place during the Dirty War, all under cover of "fighting terrorism".

The last time the agency was eyed for reform by some pesky president (Raúl Alfonsín, in 1985), they murdered one of his top fundraisers and closest personal friends (Osvaldo Sivak). There, too, it took over 2 years for the public to realize they were behind it. Hopefully it won't take them as long this time.
