Boehner can't rule out Homeland Security Department shutdown
Source: AP
House Speaker John Boehner left open the possibility Thursday of a potential shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security because of a congressional impasse over immigration.
He said a shutdown "would be bad," but that Senate Democrats would be to blame if the department's $40 billion budget were to lapse in late February.
"The House has done its job. We've spoken. And now it's up to the Senate to do their job," the Ohio Republican said. "If funding for Homeland Security lapses, Washington Democrats are gonna bear the responsibility." ''
The House has passed a bill that funds the department through September, when the current budget year ends, while also overturning President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration.

(25,251 posts)the Dems. Now if there is a shutdown - Boehner has put the suggestion out there that it is the Dems fault. Even though we know that behind the scenes they are playing funny games to sabotage the Dems and make them look like the bad guys.
Why don't the Dems get out in front of a story first? Someone should call the Repugs and expose the games they are playing and say that if their is a shutdown of Homeland Security - that it's the Repugs fault.

(21,768 posts)There are Democrats calling this out. However, you would not know that if you watch cable news or turn on your car radio (all conservative hate all the time).
The number one (in ratings) cable news network is FOX. The number one radio show is Rush, followed by Savage and Levine. These programs are carried on 24 hour rotation on several stations in my American Heartland area.
I challenge any conservative complaining about liberal media to name one widespread liberal news source that has the ratings and clout of these programs.
The real pisser is that even when they can't get the advertising to make these shows profitable, they are supported by right-wing non-profits (read billionaires) that keep them on the air.

(22,000 posts)All funding bills start in the House and the Republicans control both chambers. If they can't pass it, then they will be blamed for it. It is the Republicans that are all huffy about national security, yet they want to shut down the department that funds it (granted not every part will shut down, but some will). The guy has spent way too many hours in the tanning bed because he's brain is clearly BAKED. I strongly believe they are going to blink on this one. It is a losing issue for them.

Now personally, I think the DHS is a joke and provides almost no value to the country, but just for the sake of jobs I'd hate to see it shut down.

(39,405 posts)and then I dug down in the weeds of the Congressional Record or something and found someone DID frame it correctly or asked the right questions.
Unfortunately, there would be no news coverage of that.
One possible reason in the MSM's defense is it isn't party leadership doing the correct framing.
It's tough to do their "he said, she said" shtick when the "she said" said just says "What he said."

The shut-down worked so well for you the last time . . . remember?
Buy the way, John, why don't you just STFD and make way for the REAL House Majority Leader, Senator Ted Cruz!?!?!?!?
Turns out, ol' Ted has more influence in the House than you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(1,508 posts)They destroyed us in the midterm elections. The shutdown didn't hurt them at all. It did "work out so well" for them.

(11,495 posts)Only around 38% of voters actually took the time to vote, and the majority of that small turnout were republicans. We weren't "destroyed", we just had very low voter turnout, and now we will pay for that. However republicans are the ones looking like idiots because they can't agree on anything.

(1,508 posts)The election results were a landslide victory for the Republicans. They have the House in perpetuity and the Senate for at least two years.
The low turnout says that people didn't give a damn about the shutdown. If they did, they'd have come out to get rid of those responsible. They didn't. Because they didn't care about it.
No one wanted to vote for Democrats at all.
