Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Americans won't need "a large adjustment" if the high court rules that gay marriage is a constitutional right.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Ginsburg said Americans have been becoming more accepting of gay people in recent years.
The change in peoples attitudes on that issue has been enormous, Ginsburg said. In recent years, people have said, This is the way I am. And others looked around, and we discovered its our next-door neighbor -- were very fond of them. Or its our childs best friend, or even our child. I think that as more and more people came out and said that this is who I am, the rest of us recognized that they are one of us."
While speaking at an event in Minnesota in September, Ginsburg called the shift in Americans' attitude on gay marriage "remarkable."

(1,915 posts)you just dont have to fully define it.
marriage is a coupling, of two people, adults, who consent to
dedicate themselves to each other........stop.
under that definition, which is the definition of marriage at least
90%, gay marriage is allowed. so the definition of marriage itself
doesnt have to be changed, just brought back a step.
this definition for example wouldnt allow for three people or children or
animals like the crazies are saying.

(60,010 posts)It is a pending case that she has commented on. Normally there should be no discussion related to pending cases.

(67,112 posts)SCOTUS had decided to let the bans gradually be overturned so that the move toward gay marriage for all would be slow, rather than some ultimatum from SCOTUS making it suddenly the law of the land, which these observers thought would cause a lot of upheaval than this more gradual approach. I agree with them. There will, of course, be some states clinging to their bans, but at least this more gradual approach has minimized those with bans that will probably be overturned by SCOTUS. And for those states with bans already overturned, it will hopefully be a non-event.
