First on CNN: Philadelphia wins bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention
Source: CNN
Philadelphia will host the Democratic National Convention in July 2016, a source with knowledge of the selection process tells CNN.
While the Democratic National Committee would not confirm Philadelphia's selection, the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the official announcement would be made Thursday.
New York and Columbus, Ohio, were the two other cities vying for the right to host the Democratic convention. The event is scheduled for the week of July 25, 2016.
Democrats' decision to nominate the party's presidential nominee in Philadelphia is a major win for former Gov. Ed Rendell, who had been spearheading efforts to convince Democrats to choose the city he once led. Rendell served as Philadelphia mayor from 1992 to 2000.

(35,443 posts)The Republicans are going to target Penn hard which is why Chris Christie may get the VP nod.

I am also not sure how much popularity Christie has in Pennsylvania. I realize that the Philadelphia media covers New Jersey, including the governor. But I suspect that the main thing people know about him is probably bridge-gate.

(35,443 posts)Scott Walker is coming on as the potential VP. He's now in the spotlight, and he's not holding up well.

(10,500 posts)brothers can go to buy Walker the election, either the primary or the general. I do know that they would love to have him in the White House.
I think the GOP nominee will either be Bush or Walker.

(2,157 posts)The Democratic get out the vote effort has grown increasingly stagnant since 2010, the state party leadership just got a fresh change & we could have really used the funding & publicity associated with the convention... Congratulations to Philly tho!

(60 posts)Hopefully this helps jump start a light rail project. With solid public transportation Columbus would look mighty attractive. Wouldn't be surprised if the lack there of played at least a tiny part in not being selected. Big donors travel so I don't think Philly was picked just due it's east coast location.

(94,639 posts)...based on my experience in Charlotte. Outside of a megacity, the Convention pretty much takes over all of downtown and screws up life for everyone else.

The last time we hosted a Democratic Convention was 1948 where Harry Truman gave a pretty rousing speech.
