Winter storm once again brings region to a crawl (Boston)

Last edited Mon Feb 9, 2015, 04:05 PM - Edit history (1)

Another snowstorm is paralyzing most of Massachusetts Monday morning, forcing the shutdown of some services on the Orange and Red lines, the cancellation of most flights at Boston’s Logan Airport, and the closure of most area schools and colleges.

The storm, which is expected to generate up to two feet in Boston and parts of Eastern Massachusetts before it ends, prompted Governor Charlie Baker and Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh to close both state offices and Boston City Hall. “The storm is as bad as we expected,’’ Baker said Monday.

Boston has now seen its highest 30-day total in recorded history, according to the National Weather Service. By 7 a.m., 61.6 inches had fallen in the city, surpassing the total of 58.8 inches set in 1978.

Since the storm began Saturday, Norwell had recorded 21.3 inches of snow as of 11 a.m. Monday, 20 inches had fallen in Rockland, and North Weymouth had received 19.8 inches. Much of the state has more than 6 inches on the ground, and 12.1 inches were measured at Logan Airport in Boston at 7 a.m.

I'm just north of Boston on the coast (Lynn) and we'd had 5+ feet. This is the 3rd consecutive Monday major storm. What do I have to sacrifice to appease the SnowGods??

Although we've gotten many of the same storms and snowfall has been measurable even here in the valley, the snowpack on the mountains is far less than it should be.

Southern California is still hurting, too.

That's the problem with climate change, one region gets deluged while the rest parch.

this time of year, plus we had several days of extreme high winds. Now it's supposed to be near 40 by the end of the week. This has been a really crazy winter here.

a couple of really freak high winds there. Didn't last very long but did quite a bit of tree damage. Very unusual for there.

Things here are so bad that I can't even open the door. I have bills to pay and there is no way I can get to a mailbox. My street is not passable but neither is the rest of my town.
The road crews are doing their best. Another storm due Friday, another after that on Monday. I give up. I don't even have a bottle of wine!!!

I was here during the blizzard of '78. That was nothing compared to this!

Amherst to be exact. We have four feet of snow on the ground, rising over the top of our picnic table and then four feet on top of the table. We're supposed to get another foot before the end of this storm late tonight...and there's another storm on it's way for the end of the week.

3 feet, then 2 feet, then 2 feet, then 6 inches, and now 2 feet or so.

Luckily, it's been fluffy snow, so I haven't lost my power. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed the roof doesn't collapse.

(Which is rarely done)

But, of course, bad winter weather is common in many areas and would not warrant "news"

Unless the storm is going to affect the entire nation, it doesn't belong in LBN.

If this storm had been in the Midwest, and a story posted in LBN, it would have been locked within hours. I've seen stories of major flooding in the Midwest locked, and stories about the possibility of light rain in downtown Los Angeles left alone.

If you don't want to read my post, I suggest that you ignore me.

And that's misleading readers because it is not the truth.

And you can bet the last thing I'll do is put you on ignore so that you can continue to mislead people without challenge.

in Journalism. Rarely, there's stories that cross over. This isn't one of them.

Try starting a new OP in LBN. It will tell you:

"Post the latest news from reputable mainstream news websites and blogs. Important news of national interest only. No analysis or opinion pieces. No duplicates. News stories must have been published within the last 12 hours. Use the published title of the story as the title of the discussion thread."

Notice the bolded part? Snow in February is normal, not important and it only matters where it is snowing.

I'm not misleading anyone, I quoting LBN rules.

I'm not telling you to be silent, please return the favor.

they want to spend to build the Keystone and build a pipeline to bring all the melt-off water from New England to SoCal, or at least build one to take the floodwater from the pineapple express in WA down to the southwest? Then this thread would truly be of national interest.

tonight through tomorrow. I have no way to get to work other than a cab, and they aren't really running either. The governor declared a snow emergency and asked employers to let employees work from home tomorrow if possible. I made it in today, but I was one of a handful of people there, however there is no way I am putting up with this tomorrow especially if there is no public transportation.
