JUSTICE THOMAS: COURT SIGNALS SUPPORT FOR GAY MARRIAGE
Source: AP
BY MARK SHERMAN
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Justice Clarence Thomas is criticizing his Supreme Court colleagues for refusing to block same-sex marriage in Alabama until the court resolves the issue nationwide in a few months.
Thomas said in a dissenting opinion Monday that the court's Alabama order could be seen as a signal that the justices already have decided they will declare that gay and lesbian couples have a right to marry under the Constitution.
The court often freezes lawsuits in place when they raise the same issue the court already has agreed to decide. Since October, the justices have repeatedly turned away state requests to keep same-sex marriages from taking place until appeals are resolved.
Alabama's plea is the first since the court stepped into the issue last month.

(6,252 posts)He's just another one of those republi-CON IGMFU's ("I Got Mine, F-U" . Happy to climb up the ladder and get for himself, and just as happy to pull the ladder up behind him so nobody else can enjoy that same benefit.
And I'm sure he thinks he's a better Christian than the rest of us, too.
But bless his heart - it's people like him and scalia and alito who help me get clear on things. If they approve of it, then I know there's definitely something wrong and highly suspect with it. If they disapprove of it, then I know it's well worth supporting.

(57,936 posts)I will gladly recommend it. Thomas needs to be shamed for his discrimination against same-sex couples and against gender equality. Marriage is not just about rice and flowers. It is also about tax deductions, rights to benefits in the workplace and all kinds of other advantages offered to married couples.

(33,688 posts)Roberts will go with the flow and so will Kennedy. Roberts is a Chief Justice and CJs always have a concern about their legacy. Besides, this issue doesn't involve corporate power and profits so he will let it slide.
The inevitable dissents from Soapy Sam, Fat Tony and Uncle Ruckus will be comedy gold.

(5,586 posts)Same Sex marriage is an issue pending before the court at this time. Yet somehow, lower courts are continuing to rule on the issue despite a forthcoming ruling from the Supreme Court. Normally, lower courts refrain from ruling on an issue when the Supreme Court has a case pending before it.
If this was any other issue, we'd be up in arms about this.
Like others here though, i hope the ruling is 6-3 in our favor when it comes out later this year.
