California unseated as earthquake capital by unlikely newcomer

Source: KPCC FM

California is no longer the earthquake
capital of the contiguous U.S., and even
earthquake capital Alaska has been
surpassed by an unlikely new contender,
according to a new report.

That new capital is Oklahoma. Before
2009, the Sooner state was barely on the
map, according to stats provided by the
United States Geological Survey.

According to the Center for Investigative
Reporting's study :

Oklahoma recorded more than three
times as many earthquakes as
California in 2014 and remains well
ahead in 2015. Data from the U.S.
Geological Survey shows that
Oklahoma had 562 earthquakes of
magnitude 3.0 or greater in 2014;
California had 180. As of Jan. 31,
Oklahoma recorded 76 earthquakes
of that magnitude, compared with
California’s 10.

According to the Advanced National
Seismic System global catalog, in
2014, Oklahoma even beat Alaska,
the nation’s perennial leader in
total earthquakes, though many
small events in remote areas go
unrecorded there.

CIR's report found Kansas, Texas, Ohio
and Colorado all had major upswings in
seismic activity in recent years.

It's how the effect was discovered in the first place. The army was pumping wastewater into the ground for 'disposal'. The nearest univeristies started recording curious swarms of microquakes and small quakes, that began and ended like the normal human 8 hour workday...

When they stop injecting the water, things will quickly go back to normal seismically. What won't go back to normal, is the quality of the groundwater.

Healdsburg has had: (M1.5 or greater)

11 earthquakes today
30 earthquakes in the past 7 days
122 earthquakes in the past month
1,571 earthquakes in the past year

According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Earth Sciences division, seismicity was very low prior to the use of the Geyser steam field for geothermal energy, although this may have been the result of low seismic coverage of the area. Before 1969, there were no earthquakes above magnitude 2 recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in an approximately 70 square miles (180 km2) area around the Geysers.Studies have shown that injecting water into the Geysers field produces earthquakes from magnitude 0.5 to 3.0, although a 4.6 occurred in 1973 and magnitude four events increased thereafter. Even with increasing injection rates over time, the rate of magnitude 3 earthquakes has remained relatively unchanged since the 1980s,[11] although the amount of earthquakes has increased significantly. A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck near the Geysers on January 12, 2014. Despite the increases in the number of earthquakes and the fears of local residents, it is unlikely that a large earthquake will occur at the Geysers since there is no large earthquake fault or fracture nearby.

Nevertheless, the Prune Pickers can hold their heads high: Their tally of total earthquakes rivals that of the entire state of Oklahoma.

Coincidentally, and I mention it only in passing, the area that is getting shaken to pieces has been fracked down to the mantle.
