'Selfie' photo post on social media with dead body leads to teen's arrest

A 16-year-old has been charged with homicide and a firearms count in the death of another teen who was found in his home Wednesday

Authorities say a western Pennsylvania teenager charged in the shooting death of another teen took a “selfie” with the body and sent it to a friend on social media.

The 16-year-old boy is charged with homicide and a firearms count in the death of 16-year-old Ryan Mangan, who was found on Wednesday evening in his Jeannette home.

Police were contacted by the mother of another boy who said he had received a photo showing the suspect with the victim after he’d been shot, and also received text messages from the suspect saying “Told you I cleaned up the shells” and “Ryan was not the last one.”

Westmoreland County district attorney John Peck told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review that the photo “was a key piece of evidence that led investigators to the defendant”.

The alleged selfie obtained by police showed Morton posing in front of Mangan’s body. A woman contacted police Thursday after her son received the Snapchat photo from Morton, police said.

Morton is charged with criminal homicide and murder in the first degree, in addition to one count of possession of a firearm by a minor, according to court documents. He was denied bail Friday night.

Authorities said Mangan, 16, was found shot to death inside his mother’s Rankin Avenue home around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Sources told Channel 11’s Joe Holden that Mangan was shot once in the head.

The selfie “depicted the victim sitting in the chair with a gunshot wound to the face,” according to a police affidavit. “It also depicts a black male taking the selfie with his face facing the camera and the victim behind the actor. The photo had the name ‘Maxwell’ across the top.”

My same address. My mother graduated from Jeannette H.S., my great grandmother owned a home and a small business in Jeannette. I used to walk from a nearby town that I lived in to her house and to the Jeannette Library. Now the town is a ghost town. There are good people in this town but it is being overtaken by drugs and violence. It's sad. The Monroeville shooting was also very close to my current home. Bad week for Western PA.
