Bentley says no prison bill in special session

Gov. Robert Bentley said Tuesday he will not include an ambitious prison construction bill, the centerpiece of his legislative agenda this spring, in any special session call.

“We’re going to take up one thing at a time in a special session, and what we have to take up in the special session is General Fund funding,” Bentley said in a phone interview Tuesday morning.

The governor said he was looking at “late summer and fall” for a special session call. That call will likely focus on finding up to $85 million for Alabama's Medicaid program. Officials say they need that money to maintain existing services and launch regional care organizations (RCOs), aimed at managing cost growth in the program.

“We’ll be announcing that in the near future,” he said.
