This Alabama airport is the most expensive in the nation, study shows

Huntsville International Airport made the top of the list in a survey of the nation’s cheapest airports, but not in a good way.
NetCredit, a financial services company, is out with an analysis of what Americans are paying for airline tickets, and it rates Huntsville International Airport as the nation’s most expensive. ... According to the survey, tickets at Huntsville average $456.17 per flier. By contrast, the survey named Atlantic City, N.J. as the nation’s cheapest airport, with an average ticket price of $109.43.
The analysis averaged the cost of a flight from the airports at a state-wide level. Then the study compared the area’s average local pay to average domestic flight prices at a state level. It also used data from the Bureau of Transport on fares and compared it with average wages in states and metro areas, using numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The news was equally bad for the rest of the state. ... Alabama fliers pay some of the highest fares for flights in the country, according to the survey. ... West Virginia was the highest, at an average of $419.27. Alabama averaged $410.93 and was just behind Vermont. Mississippi followed up with an average ticket price of $398.65.
The analysis noted that traffic through Huntsville International tends to skew toward government travelers, due to aerospace and defense industries in the area. Since these fliers rarely pay for their own tickets, airlines don’t feel the demand for price competition, the survey noted.
