His poor child...she was so hurt and he knows he was part of it. And it's so good he's trying to make something good come from it.

He blames himself completely for Patti killing herself, had her go through anti-gay therapy and such which is what ultimately caused her to kill herself. But bringing that part up would've been a downer for the show so it wasn't broached (and it would be hard for people to forgive him of that). If you dig deeply into the background of it it's an extremely tragic story and this old guy has been trying for over two decades to make amends for his sins of the past. It is poignant that he made his realization while at a church where a preacher gay bashed, as opposed to immediately after his daughter died.

His daughter had been gay. She committed suicide.

What a nice man. His wife is very lucky.

That was lovely. I love Ellen and I hope this man finds peace in his life. I am so sorry for his loss.
