He could have just stayed doubling-down on being homophobic. I mean, look at the 20-25% or so who STILL trust/watch Fauxxx Noose, think that the FBI should be shut down, think that tRump and putin are good guys, and who also think that the more legitimate news agencies are FAKE in reporting the news
Dunderheads like those, you'll never get them to see anything.

(31,112 posts)In fact you bring up a good point.
One of the main reasons a deplorable stays a deplorable is they wont admit they are wrong, about everything, which they are.
If they could admit it, they could not only come to the side of good but they could live with a whole lot less hate and fear too.

(13,871 posts)I thought that just his clip might be good for a few thousand votes, to sway some of those on the fence who were having trouble with the whole idea of voting for a Democrat.
I think the Vietnam War ended when it got to the point that everybody knew somebody who had lost a friend or relative in the war. I think the surprisingly quick turnaround on American opinions on gay rights in general and marriage equality in particular is a similar case.
I ran into a guy at my 20 year high school reunion years ago. He mentioned his partner, and then asked me - since we had been pretty good friends in high school - "Certainly you knew I was gay didn't you?" He laughed so loud he spit out his drink when I deadpanned my response that "But there weren't any gay people when we were in High School." He agreed, saying that he could have never considered coming out in South Carolina in the 1970s. Now, everyone, even hard core right wingers and Trumpers, know someone who is gay or has an openly gay relative.
It's much harder to hate that which doesn't have a human face.

(5,210 posts)THIS man is now reaching who you could NEVER reach.
I am so sorry for his loss, but I honor him to the heavens, and am so grateful he's turning his grief into activism like this.
Also grateful to Ellen for giving him a platform. I hope he gets many more.

(36 posts)We can condemn these naïve archaic beliefs but these were taught and reinforced for their entire life by parents, friends, school, church... it was a way of life. Unfortunately for this man, a tragedy I can't imagine going through, is what finally opened his eyes.

(11,443 posts)Went to college, moved around a few years (including Washington, DC) then eventually moved back in the late 1970s.
I started changing my attitudes in college and then later after I was drafted into the Army during Vietnam.
Black people basically lived in Third World conditions over much of the state. The going rate for picking cotton and plowing mules for 10-12 hours was $2.00 a day, or $15.00 to $20.00 bucks a day in today's dollars. Schools didn't start integrating until 1965.
